San Antonio Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets Prediction, Preview, and Odds

The San Antonio Spurs (3-13; 6-10 ATS) are on an 11-game losing streak following Friday’s 118-112 defeat at the Golden State Warriors. They covered a 10-point spread, but it was another disappointing display from the Spurs, who went 12-for-47 from beyond the 3-point line and committed 20 turnovers. 

Devin Vassell led the way for San Antonio last Friday, notching 24 points off the bench. Victor Wembanyama had 22 points and nine rebounds, while Keldon Johnson double-doubled with 22 points and 12 boards. 

The Spurs play at the fourth-fastest pace in the NBA, recording 101.9 possessions per 48 minutes. They are 28th in the league in offensive efficiency (106.4 points per 100 possessions) and 25th in defensive efficiency (119.0). 

San Antonio is turning the ball over on 14.0% of its possessions (28th in the league). The Spurs are making just 33.8% of their 3-pointers (tied-27th) while handing out 28.7 assists per contest (3rd). Victor Wembanyama is their leading scorer with 19.0 points per game, but the first overall pick from the 2023 NBA Draft is making just 43.1% of his field goals.

They’ve dropped two straight contests at the Orlando Magic 124-119 and the Houston Rockets 105-86 even though Nikola Jokic has accounted for a staggering 68 points, 32 rebounds, and 20 assists through those two games. 

The Nuggets struggled mightily at Toyota Center in Houston last Friday. They shot 34.0% from the field (7-for-30 from deep) while posting an underwhelming 17/15 assist-to-turnover ratio. Jokic dropped 38 points on the Rockets, and the rest of Denver’s starting five combined for 38 points. 

“You've got to bring something to the party,” Denver head coach Michael Malone said after the Nuggets’ second unit scored ten points against Houston.

The Nuggets score 115.3 points per 100 possessions (10th in the NBA) and surrender 111.9 points in return (also 10th). They miss Jamal Murray (hamstring) a lot, and Murray will sit out his tenth straight game Sunday when the Nuggets host the lowly Spurs.

As I’ve mentioned above, the Spurs prefer to play fast. The Nuggets won’t mind picking up the pace in this matchup given the Spurs’ defensive flaws, so I’m expecting to see a high-scoring affair. Denver won’t replicate that ugly shooting performance from the Rockets game. 

The total has gone over in 14 of San Antonio’s last 19 games overall and 13 of its previous 19 tilts versus the conference rivals. On the other hand, the under is 6-2 in Denver’s last eight contests overall.
