Santa Anita Handicap 2023: Odds, preview, pace, more

Bob Baffert will not be taking part in any of the four Kentucky Derby 2023 preps Saturday due to his Churchill Downs suspension. But the trainer has the morning-line favorite in the biggest race of the day for older runners.

Defunded is the 7-2 favorite for the Grade 1, $500,000 Santa Anita Handicap. Post time from Arcadia, Calif., is 8:31 p.m. EST, with FanDuel TV showing the 1 1/4-mile race for runners aged 4 and up.

Baffert has won the Big ‘Cap four times. Misremembered took the 2010 running before Game on Dude scored in the 2011, ’13 and ’14 versions of this race.

Defunded carries the highweight of 125 pounds Saturday as he pursues his second Grade 1 win. His first came last October at Santa Anita in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1).

In his last start, Defunded was second to Art Collector on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1). Jockey Juan Hernandez will climb aboard the 5-year-old Dialed In gelding for owners Michael Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman.

Proxy (4-1) also exits the Pegasus, in which he finished fifth for trainer Michael Stidham. The winner of last November’s Clark Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs heads west in pursuit of a second Grade 1 win.

Warrant (4-1) seeks his first graded win for trainer Bad Cox since the 2021 Oklahoma Derby (G3). He steps up in class after beating allowance foes in his last start Jan. 26 in Fair Grounds.

Stilleto Boy (5-1) was third in the Pegasus behind Art Collector and Defunded as a 46-1 long shot. Trained by Ed Moger Jr., the Grade 2 victor was third in last year’s Santa Anita Handicap.

Newgrange (6-1), a former Baffert runner, is racing now for trainer Phil D’Amato’s barn. He took the San Pasqual Stakes (G2) at 1 1/8 miles Jan. 28.
