Scotland vs England predictions and tips: McTominay to strike again

The 116th instalment of the oldest fixture in international football takes place on Tuesday when Scotland face England at Hampden Park, Glasgow (kick-off, 7.45pm).

The countries first met in an official fixture in 1872 and this match marks – albeit belatedly – the 150th anniversary of that landmark game.

Scotland have not beaten England in five meetings this century but will fancy their chances of a first victory over the auld enemy since 1999 after winning five successive Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Momentum on Scotland’s side

Scotland’s excellent form ahead of this contest has given them a real chance of defeating England for the first time since November 1999.

The Scots have won all five of their Euro 2024 qualifiers, picking up victories over Spain and Norway during that run, and qualification for the tournament is within touching distance.

Since losing to Ukraine at Hampden Park in a World Cup qualifier in June last year, Steve Clarke’s side have chalked up six consecutive victories at this venue, scoring 14 goals and conceding just one.

Confidence is oozing through the Scotland squad and, with home advantage, there is every chance they can come out on top.

Gareth Southgate’s visitors flattered to deceive in the 1-1 draw against Ukraine on Sunday, with the disjointed performance and questionable selections giving the head coach plenty to think about.

While Scotland are likely to stick with the same starting XI that beat Cyprus on Friday, England are expected to rotate and this could have a negative effect on the fluidity of their play.

Scott relishing national service

Although Scott McTominay has been a peripheral figure for Manchester United this season, the same cannot be said when he turns up for international duty and he is in superb scoring form the Scots.

The 26-year-old has scored six goals across the five Euro 2024 qualifiers – the 2-1 win in Norway was his only blank in that run – and he is certainly enjoying playing for his country.

With questions about the strength of England’s defence, McTominay will be eager to stay on the goal trail and he offers great value at 6/1 to score any time.

Trio look worth a shot

Jude Bellingham has been in sensational form for Real Madrid, scoring five goals from four La Liga outings, and he is one of England’s most dangerous threats.

Should he be given more freedom to press forward, it is likely he will be presented with at least one opportunity to test the goalkeeper.

Along with Bellingham, Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka looks like a good shout to hit the target and he was lively in the draw against Ukraine, crashing an effort against the bar.

The 22-year-old has scored four times in Euro 2024 qualifying and he continues to be a leading light for England in the final third.

Rounding off this bet builder is for Callum McGregor, Scotland’s midfield maestro, to force Jordan Pickford into a save.

The 30-year-old opened the scoring in Scotland’s last home clash against Georgia and he will be eager to get himself forward in front of a raucous crowd.
