Scottish transfer deadline day: All you need to know as January window nears its end

Here is everything you need to know about transfer deadline day.

When does the transfer window close?

The transfer window opened on 1 January and will close in Scotland at 23:30 GMT on Thursday, 1 February.

New signings are usually eligible for the next domestic game, as long as all paperwork has been completed.

England's transfer window closes 30 minutes prior to Scotland's, but Scottish clubs can still complete signings from English clubs between 23:00 and 23:30 on Thursday.

Biggest deals so far

It has been a fairly quiet January when it comes to notable deals in Scotland's top flight.

Leaders Celtic have bought winger Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna, while midfielder Hyeok-kyu Kwon headed out on loan to St Mirren.

Title challengers Rangers have taken Nordsjaelland's Mohamed Diomande with an obligation to buy the midfielder in the summer, but their most eye-catching arrival is Portugal Under-21 forward Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves.

Tie-ins with English Premier League clubs have helped Dundee and Hibernian. The Dens Park club, who also paid a transfer fee to Everton for defender Ryan Astley, have brought in three players on loan from Burnley after a talent share deal was agreed by the American owners of both clubs.

At Hibs, Nathan Moriah-Welsh arrived permanently and fellow midfielder Emiliano Marcondes joined on loan from Bournemouth, whose billionaire American owner Bill Foley has been given the green light to take a minority stake in the Easter Road club.

Who could be on the move?

Many a pundit has suggested Hearts and Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland would make a good signing for either of the Old Firm, but there appears to be no concrete interest shown in the 28-year-old, who is in talks about extending his contract.

Ross County midfielder Yan Dhanda has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Hearts in the summer, but the Tynecastle club will not bid to bring the 25-year-old to Edinburgh sooner unless there are any exits before deadline.

Hearts have now added another midfielder, with Scott Fraser joining on loan from Charlton Athletic on Wednesday.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in at least one, possibly two, new faces - and those are likely to be loans.

The club are likely to be accommodating if midfielder David Turnbull, who is out of contract this summer, wants to leave in search of more regular game time. Cardiff City are among those interested in the 24-year-old Scotland international.

However, an injury to defender Cameron Carter-Vickers could scupper Gustaf Lagerbielke's proposed loan move to Lecce.

Rangers' Ecuador midfielder Jose Cifuentes looked to be on his way to Rizespor in Turkey on loan a few days ago and the 24-year-old could still exit Ibrox in search of regular football.

Manager Philippe Clement is looking to bring in at least one, probably two, players on loan and Colombia winger Oscar Cortes is expected to sign from French club Lens.

Hibs head coach Nick Montgomery is still seeking a centre-back, with Wales Under-21 international Owen Bevan the most likely arrival on loan from Bournemouth.

Craig Levein is targeting a striker for St Johnstone, but needs to make space in the squad first, and Ross County boss Derek Adams is likely to add to the six loan signings he has already brought in.

Taking a loan of the system

Loan deals seem to be de rigueur during a January window and Dundee, in particular, have raised a few eyebrows with the number of players they've signed that way already.

With the return of Liverpool left-back Owen Beck for a second spell this season, Tony Docherty's squad now contains 10 players contracted from other clubs.

However, while Premiership clubs are limited to one loan player from a top-flight rival, they can have five from Scottish teams and seven more from other countries, although world governing body Fifa will be reducing that to six next season.

So Docherty still has room for another two - and his Premiership rivals even more - given the current rules.

We'll find out in the coming hours as the Thursday evening deadline approaches. And, of course, players who are free agents can still be signed thereafter. Tick tock!
