SEC Football Odds for Week 5
South Carolina vs. Tennessee; 7:30 p.m. ET (SEC Network)
The Vols bounced back from their crushing defeat to Florida two weeks ago with an emphatic 45-14 win over UTSA last weekend. However, they still didn’t get an explosive game from Joe Milton III, who finished with a 58% completion percentage for 209 yards and two touchdowns against an American Athletic Conference opponent.
Both schools thrive where the other struggles, which sets up coaching as the x factor in this contest. The Vols struggle in pass defense, and the Gamecocks starting QB Spencer Rattler has compiled 1,242 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions in four starts. On the flip side, South Carolina allows a lot of yards on the ground, and Tennessee has a plethora of backs who can move the chains, including Jaylen Wright who already has two 100-yard rushing games.
The Vols are -12.5-point favorites, and that’s likely due to the one strength of their passing defense — generating sacks. They are tied for third in the nation with 16 sacks in four games, and the Gamecocks have already surrendered 16 in the same number of games. If Tennessee continues its success, they should be able to stall enough drives to win the game, but covering the spread is another story.
Florida vs. Kentucky; Noon ET (ESPN)
Kentucky is undefeated, but it’s the Gators who are ranked. The Wildcats have yet to face a team the caliber of Florida, but they have shown signs of offensive dominance that should test the Gators’ defense. Despite being more battle tested and ranked, the Gators are just 1-point favorites.
Wildcats’ starting QB Devin Leary and running back Re’mahn Davis have led an electric offense so far this season and a big part of the reason for the close point spread. They are leading the offense to average 38 points per game, nearly a 50% third down conversion rate, and have scored 14 of the teams 20 touchdowns. Their one glaring weakness as an offense is turnovers. Leary has tossed at least one interception in every game, including two against Vanderbilt in their first conference game last weekend.
In a game with a spread of just a point, possessions are hyper-critical. The Gators haven’t been quite as effective as in years past at getting to the QB, but it may not take much in this one. With extra possessions, Florida should be able to avoid the narrow upset on the road.
LSU vs. Ole Miss; 6 p.m. ET (ESPN)
QB Jayden Daniels and LSU’s offense seem to have figured things out since Game 1. Since the opening letdown game, Daniels has thrown at least two touchdowns in every game on a 69% completion percentage or better and has just one interception overall. He has led his team to at least 34 points in each of the next three outings. What appears to still be struggling, however, is the Tigers’ defense against quality QBs.
In the opening game, they allowed 342 yards through the air and four touchdowns to Florida State’s Jordan Travis. In their three-point victory last weekend against the Arkansas Razorbacks, they allowed 289 yards passing and three touchdowns to KJ Jefferson. They also picked him off twice, which helped them seal the win. Now, they are up against another quality QB in Jaxson Dart, who has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in four starts.
That’s bad news for the Tigers. That’s especially so given that Ole Miss’ defense has seen an electric offense once already this season in Georgia Tech, who they defeated 48-23.
LSU is a 2.5-point favorite against Ole Miss. We expect the game to live up to the hype as the two ranked, conference foes battle it this weekend. With a moneyline as high as +122 on some sportsbooks, taking Ole Miss to pull off the upset may be worth considering.
