Serie A: Maldini on AC Milan move for Messi after Barcelona departure: It would have been a feasible operation

AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini has discussed his departure as head director at Milanello six months ago, expressing frustration with those who lack respect for the club's identity and history.

Maldini denied accusations of being unwilling to share power, highlighting his lack of authority in player signings.

"There are people who are passing through institutions like Milan, in the world of football clubs with an international profile, and who have no real respect for their identity and their history," Maldini told La Reppublica.

"I have never had signing power even for loans. However, to be accused of not wanting to share [power], I don't find it at all fair."

Maldini addressed AC Milan's internal struggles, mentioning the need to fight with the board to recognize the footballing value of midfielder Sandro Tonali.

However, he expressed regret for not being aware of Tonali's involvement in a betting issue, emphasizing the importance of better understanding and managing players.

"This makes me realize once again that we never do enough to try to manage and understand the players. It is also a defeat for us," he added.

Regarding Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Maldini admits uncertainty about the terms of his return or current role but suggests that the Swedish star follow a similar path of observation and learning before taking action, listing him as a personal advisor to AC Milan's owner, Gerry Cardinale.

Maldini also acknowledged that AC Milan had an option to sign Messi himself just when he was released after not renewing with Barcelona.

"It would have been a feasible operation," he noted.
