Six Nations Scores, Results, and Standings

One week into the Six Nations Championship 2023, and already we’ve seen Six Nations scores that have shaken up the competition.

In what is perhaps the most important Six Nations in a decade, Europe’s six best teams are vying for the upper hand ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023 later this year. Ireland were the bookies’ favourite to win the tournament ahead of Round One, and have managed to extend their lead in the betting odds courtesy of an impressive win over Wales. England saw their chances slip with a home loss to Scotland, while France have remained in the mix with a gritty victory over France.

We look at all the latest Six Nations scores, Six Nations results and overall standings off the back of Round One of the tournament, and break down each team’s progress so far.

Six Nations Scores: Round One

Round One of the Six Nations confirmed the expectations of rugby fans around the world that this would be a fantastic edition of the annual tournament. Here’s an overview of the Six Nations scores in Round One:

  • Ireland defeated Wales 34-10
  • Scotland defeated England 29-23
  • France defeated Italy 29-24

While Scotland beating England in their own backyard was certainly the most momentous match of the round, here’s a closer look at how each of these Six Nations results played out on the weekend.

Round One Six Nations Scores: Wales vs Ireland

The opening game of the Six Nations saw Ireland heading across the divide to take on Wales in Cardiff.

This match did not pan out the way that new coach Warren Gatland would have hoped, with his side getting well and truly trounced in front of their home fans yet again. While a win wasn’t necessarily expected against the World No.1 Ireland, Wales got off to the worst possible start, conceding tries in the second, ninth and twentieth minutes to go behind 24-3 after barely 20 minutes play. Admittedly, the men in red did manage to pull the game back somewhat, turning a 27-3 halftime deficit into a 34-10 final score, with a second half that was 7-7.

A try five minutes into the second half gave Wales some hope, but Liam Williams getting yellow carded sealed their fate, and they ultimately lost by 24 points to get their Six Nations campaign off to the worst start possible.

Round One Six Nations Scores: England vs Scotland

The second match of Saturday night in the Six Nations saw Scotland head to Twickenham to take on big brother England.

Take them on is exactly what Scotland did, bringing their A-game and ultimately outsmarting the English in their own backyard. The first half was a fantastic contest, with the lead constantly changing hands as Scotland and England traded two tries each, highlighted by a fantastic effort by Duhan van der Merwe which saw the winger beat half the English team to score a 50+ metre try.

With the home side ahead 13-12 at the break, England extended their lead soon after halftime through a Genge try. However, Scotland hit back almost immediately with their own try, making the score 20-19 after an hour. Penalties were exchanged to maintain England’s one point lead with five minutes to go, until the star of the show, van der Merwe, scored again to give the Scots a six point victory.

Round One Six Nations Scores: Italy vs France

Rounding out the Six Nations results from Round One, France travelled to Rome to take on the Italians.

In a match up between last year’s champions and wooden spooners, little was expected from this clash, with the bookies overwhelmingly favouring France. However, this game delivered, as Italy nearly pulled off the Six Nations upset of the decade against the defending champions. The visiting team side came out of the gates strong, scoring through Flament in the fifth minute, then again in the 19 and 26  minutes through Ramos and Dumortier. Italy could only manage penalties for the first half an hour, but got one try back through Capuozzo to make it 14-19 at halftime.

However, a yellow card to Ollivon ten minutes into the second half saw Italy grab some momentum, claiming a penalty try and a penalty to take a 24-22 lead with 13 minutes to go in the match. France ultimately managed to scrape home with a try to Jalibert sealing the five point win, however Italy certainly gave a good account for themselves.
