Sloppy track can’t deter Caulfield from upset

Tropical Storm Nicole made the track wet at First Tracks Cumberland. Caulfield (Kadabra) won the Open 2 Trot by a length and a quarter. Broadway Giant finished second and Cherry Crown Jewel was third. It was the 35th win of Caullfield's career. He paid $12.20 to win. It's his lifetime earnings approaching $450,000. The winner of the last week's event had won last time.

Namesmuscle won the $5,800 Open 3-4 Trot for Team Athearn in 2:03 and paid $21.00 to win. It was the 41st win of Mark Athear's career.

Temperatures hovered in the low 50’s throughout the day. The judges set an initial two-second allowance due to the wet track. Bruce Ranger is Cumberland”s leading dash-winning driver of 2022 with 43 victories. Matt Athearn and Walter Case Jr. share the second spot with 39 wins each. Kevin Switzer Jr is fourth with 38 wins, Drew Campbell rounds out the top five with 37.
