Somerset end season against Kent
SOMERSET play their last home championship match of the season against Kent at Taunton where the action gets underway on Tuesday, September 19 (10.30a.m.).
The highlight of the season for many will be winning the Vitality Blast t20 20 Cup on a warm July evening at Edgbaston, where - thanks to two superb all round bowling and fielding performances Lewis Gregory - Somerset lifted the cup aloft, much to the delight of the huge number of fans who had made the trip up the M5.
However, for lovers of the longer format, the batting of James Rew who became the first in division one of the LV=Championship to pass 1000 runs, which includes five centuries, will be the highlight, of what has been a slightly disappointing season.
Yes, Somerset have survived in the top flight once again which, of course, we are all pleased about, but what everyone is wanting is to win the championship title and to achieve that the team and in particular the betting needs to become stronger and more consistent.
Yes, it's great to have James Rew, but Somerset need two more like him to enable them to post first innings totals, which has all too often been missing this summer - again.
Following the Kent game the final match is away at Edgbaston against Warwickshire and then i'ts just the long winter to look forward to.
On Tuesday lunchtime , the first day of the game against Kent , Stephen Chalke, who is the author and editor of Footprints - David Foot’s lifetime of writing, will be doing a book signing at the Somerset County Sports shop.
David, who died in 2021 at the age of 92, was born and grew up at East Coker near Yeovil and went onto become one of the most interesting and well respected journalists and authors of his time, writing with passion and insight about a range of subjects but mainly sport and particularly cricket.
His most acclaimed book was Harold Gimblett - Tormented Genius of Cricket - which was well ahead of its time in dealing with the mental agony that the local hero endured for much of his life.
Footprints will be a welcome addition to any Somerset fan's bookshelf and will be good company until the next season comes around!
