Spencer Knight is good enough to justify his contract

Spencer Knight signed a three-year contract extension with the Panthers. He will earn $4.5 million a year. The deal starts next year and ends at the start of the 2023-24 season. Knight is talented but hasn't played with enough regularity at NHL level to know if he's worth $5m a season yet. Last year was Knight's first full NHL season and he looked overwhelmed by the speed of play. With Sergei Bobrovsky starting the bulk of games, Knight was sent to the AHL mid-season. In March 2022, he returned to NHL and played well.

Thatcher Demko signed for $5.25 million for five years. The contract will resonate throughout the NHL and drive up the price of goalkeeping. The players' union is happy to see more goalies getting paid for their position.
