THE LOWDOWN

STANDARD LIEGE

777 Partners own several clubs across the globe and a common theme throughout has been supporter protest as all of those clubs go through some sort of crisis. Standard Liege are one of ‘The Big Three’ in Belgian football but required a manager, Ronny Deila, to provide some respite and finish in the top eight last year; but Deila has since left and Standard have declined once again.

A giant of Belgian football, Standard should not be floundering in the bottom-half of the Jupiler Pro League table but, once again, they are. They, though, have been much-improved since just before the September international break and begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting above the bottom four with a 2-1 win at OH Leuven last weekend extending their unbeaten run to five games.

CLUB BRUGGE

After a really poor defence of their title in which Club Brugge only just finished in the top four and went through four different managers, the 2022 Belgian champions are much-improved this season, under the management of the former Standard Liege boss, Ronny Deila, who is very much despised by the Standard supporters who he left late last season.

Club Brugge’s 1-0 victory away to Bodo/Glimt in their most recent outing in the UEFA Europa Conference League group stages in midweek means that they have suffered just two defeats in 17 matches across all competitions. In those 17 games, they have been entertaining, too, with 41 goals scored in that time.

THE TEAM NEWS

Stipe Perica remains a doubt for this weekend’s game for Standard Liege, although they will be able to name an unchanged side for this weekend’s encounter.

CLUB BRUGGE

There are no fresh injury or suspension concerns for Ronny Deila’s Club Brugge and he will be able to name a strong side for the trip to Liege this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Mignolet; Odoi, Mechele, Spileers, De Cuyper; Onyedika, Vetlesen; Zinckernagel, Vanaken, Skoras; Thiago

UNAVAILABLE: Vermant (Injured), Sabbe (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Nusa (Injured), Skov Olsen (Injured), Talbi (Injured), Meijer (Injured), Bursik (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Whenever two of Belgium’s so-called ‘big three’ meet it is an important encounter. Standard Liege have fallen away from their once great heights but some impressive signings towards the end of the transfer window and a new look midfield means they are now edging their way up the table. They will fancy their chances of posing a threat to a Club Brugge side that have been very strong but do come into this on the back of long travels in the UEFA Europa Conference League in midweek. This has potential to be a bit of a thriller on Sunday afternoon.
