The Open 2023 betting tips: Outside bets for major glory at Hoylake as Fowler, Lowry and Conners eye big weeks

For many, winning The Open is the ultimate prize in golf and someone will etch their name into the famous Claret Jug later this month.

The 151st Open will be held at the brilliant Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, a venue where greats such as Tiger Woods, Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen and Rory McIlroy have won in the past.

Another stellar field will tee it up this summer, headlined by defending champion Cameron Smith.

But such is the quality in the game at the moment, it’s hard to pick an outright winner.

Instead, a host of names are in contention, including several further down the bookies’ lists.

Outside tips to win The Open

Fowler is arguably the most in-form golfer in the world right now.

He went close at the US Open and had a number of other impressive displays this summer before finally returning to the winner’s circle at the Rocket Mortgage Classic recently.

Fowler also loves links golf and Royal Liverpool!

He won the Scottish Open at Gullane in 2015 and came second to Rory McIlroy at Hoylake in the 2014 Open.

Everything would suggest Fowler will enjoy another fine week but can he go on and finally claim his maiden major crown?

Shane Lowry 28/1

Lowry is one of the most popular Open champions in history following his historic win at Royal Portrush in 2019.

He struggled to replicate that form in the years following but has been trending back towards his best recently.

He has performed well at his last four majors without really contending.

But he did win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last September and will know his game is not far away from true major quality again.

Justin Rose 40/1

Rose claimed a brilliant win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year, proving he still has the game to compete and beat the best.

The Englishman won his sole major title at the US Open in 2013 but has five other top three career finishes in the biggest tournaments.

He was second to Francesco Molinari at Carnoustie in the 2018 Open and knows how to deal with the toughest of tests.

Rose will also have added motivation to do well in Liverpool as he strives to make the Ryder Cup team later this year.

Cameron Young 40/1

Young remains without a win his career which continues to be a surprise to many.

The 26-year-old American is a superb talent but he’s yet to truly breakthrough.

He finished second at The 150th Open at St Andrews last summer, hitting a final round 65 to finish just one shot behind Smith.

He also performed well at the Masters in April and will now hope to show his very best again at Hoylake.

Min Woo Lee 60/1

Lee is among the crop of top Australian talent in the game at the moment.

The 24-year-old looks set for a brilliant career and has enjoyed a fine season.

He finished T6 at The Players in March before a T5 at the US Open last month.

He also has pedigree on links courses, winning the 2021 Scottish Open at the intimidating Renaissance Club.

Corey Conners 80/1

Canada is also enjoying a purple patch in elite golf with their top player being Conners.

The 31-year-old won the Valero Texas Open in April and also preformed well at the Wells Fargo, the Travelers and the PGA Championship.

His three top ten career finishes at the majors have all come at the Masters but his game is certainly good enough to contend at The Open too.

A Canadian has never won the Claret Jug and Conners would dearly love to change that.
