The players that desperately need transfers this week

The transfer window closes on Friday at 11pm and Premier League clubs are in a race against time to shift their players — some unwanted, some who need a move.

Telegraph Sport picks out 22 players who are ones to watch in the final days of the window in order to kickstart or reinvigorate their careers.

Nobody can question his commitment to United after playing with broken ribs last season while he was captain, which was a role he took very seriously. But he will also be aware of England manager Gareth Southgate’s comments about playing regularly. His issue will be the sizeable wages he gets at Old Trafford.

Dutch midfielder has been beset by injuries since his arrival from Ajax three years ago. Even his bid to kick-start his Premier League career with a loan to Everton last season ended in injury frustration. Real Sociedad have shown interest this summer but United are thought to prefer a permanent deal.

Erik ten Hag has brought in Andre Onana as his No.1 and the arrival from Inter Milan will be first choice despite his shaky start. Henderson, who has England ambitions, has been given permission to undergo a medical at Crystal Palace which, if passed, would give him regular football under Roy Hodgson.

The French forward, 27, has never fully delivered on the promise he showed early on after arriving from Monaco in a shock move in 2015. He started up front at the weekend against Nottingham Forest but will not be ahead of Rasmus Hojlund when the Danish striker returns to full fitness.

Wanted by West Ham earlier in the summer before they switched their attention to Edson Alvarez. United have been in the market for a defensive midfielder in the final week of the summer transfer window, which points to McTominay’s standing under Ten Hag. Linked with Bayern Munich which would be a remarkable change of fortune.

Charges against Greenwood for rape and assault were dropped but he will leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, which came after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct. United are working with the player’s family to find him the right club to continue his career away from United.

Has not been in the matchday squad under Mikel Arteta at the start of the season which suggests he could be allowed to leave. In previous seasons he has been targeted by Newcastle but a move never materialised. Arsenal must weigh up whether he is needed after Jurrien Timber’s injury and Kieran Tierney’s loan to Real Sociedad.

Vincent Kompany once compared him to Yaya Toure, such is the potential of Lokonga in central midfield. The Burnley manager, who coached the 23-year-old at Anderlecht, was in talks over a deal for him earlier in the window but he is still available in the final days, having struggled for regular games under Arteta.

Loaned out to Fulham last season but they have targeted other full-backs this summer, meaning Soares is looking for another club while in the final year of his contract at the Emirates. The Portugal international, a Euro winner from 2016, has never held a regular spot at Arsenal or Inter Milan since leaving Southampton.

The arrival of Declan Rice has meant the tag of “Arsenal’s most expensive player” has been removed after weighing heavily around his neck since arriving from Lille in 2019 in a deal worth £72 million. Loaned out to Nice last season and Arteta has moved on without the Ivory Coast forward in his plans.

Has never settled after Chelsea won a bidding war, beating Manchester City to the £60 million signature of the Spanish left-back. His start at Stamford Bridge was not helped by burglars targeting his home, which was revealed by the Daily Telegraph, and his poor form led to fans jeering him. Manchester United need a left-back and it seems a good match.

He was pursued by Bayern Munich early in his career and broke into the England team but suffered a serious Achilles injury and was then fighting for his place back under Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. Bayer Leverkusen took him on loan and this summer Fulham and Nottingham Forest have been interested.

Saudi Pro League team Al-Ittihad, with former Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo in charge, are interested in the defender but he surely needs to be playing in the Premier League where he is in front of Southgate’s watching eyes and fighting his way back into the England team. Put himself in contention for a World Cup place last season with his form.

Brighton made an offer, thought to be around £30 million, for the England Under-21 forward earlier in the summer but the deal has not progressed. West Ham have also looked at him but have signed Mohammed Kudus. Palmer is in superb form for City but is not guaranteed a regular starting and needs to play games.

Sheffield United are interested in taking the “Salford Silva” back after his loan last season when he helped Blades earn promotion to the Premier League. But Wolves are also looking at him from the top-flight clubs and Leicester City are interested in the Championship among others for one of the most sought-after loans of the summer.

Tottenham have been leading the chase for the Wales forward but they have been joined by Brentford, who saw bids turned down earlier in the window. West Ham also had an interest before focusing on Kudus. Johnson is expected to cost around £45 million, with Spurs looking at their attacking options after Harry Kane’s departure.

Subject of interest from Manchester United late in the window as they look to sign a defensive midfielder. The Denmark international has a wealth of Premier League experience and has legs in midfield to carry his team forward. Atletico Madrid were interested previously, with Spurs eyeing Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher if they lost their man.

Bid from Spartak Moscow earlier this summer sparked ethical questions about doing business with Russian teams. No deal progressed and Sanchez received interest from French clubs, in particular Monaco and Rennes. Could be used in part-exchange for other deals as his time looks over after Spurs fans booed him last season.

As it stands he remains Spurs’ record signing at £53.8 million from the summer of 2019 from Lyon. He has since been loaned back to his old club, was thrown under the bus by Jose Mourinho for not running enough and then sent to Napoli last season where he won the title. It looks over for him at Spurs.

Much trickier position for Dier as he has entered the final year of his contract and rarely do players in that situation get granted a loan. Gary Cahill, out of loyalty from Chelsea, was one of the rare recent cases. He would be in the shop window which would not benefit Spurs. But the player needs games to force his way back into the England reckoning.

Has made it clear he wants to move to Manchester City by refusing to train. City have never paid over the odds for players despite their wealth, so Nunes must hope a compromise can be made. He would fit perfectly into Pep Guardiola’s midfield as Kevin De Bruyne is injured.

Eddie Howe made signing a left-back a priority in the last fortnight, having already bolstered his midfield. And the arrival of Lewis Hall has pushed Targett further down the pecking order. Targett was playing well enough last season to be watched by Southgate but he is also behind Dan Burn now.
