The worst of the weekend in major college football
The Deadspin Dean's list is the worst of the weekend in college football. The list includes the underachievers, the figures teams and Heisman contenders.
Spencer Petras won the starting job last week in competition with Alex Padilla. In the 7-3 victory, Petra completed 11-of-25 passes for 109 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception.
Iowa's football team won against South Dakota State. The team's quarterback, Petras, has only thrown nine touchdowns to seven interceptions in his last 13 games. Iowa's offense ranked 99th last season and 121st in total offense. Kirk Ferentz's son Brian is the coach. Brian was also involved in the racial discrimination lawsuit that ensnared Chris Doyle.
Bo Nix was a 5-star quarterback at Auburn, but he transferred to Oregon and is now a 7th-ranked player. He managed 173 yards on 37 attempts, two interceptions and a single scoring drive in his debut. NIX's team lost to Georgia. Vegas Insider updated its 2022 Heisman Trophy odds to include Bo Niz. He is 20th best in the nation.
Virginia Tech's loss to the Power 5 team was the worst of the weekend in college football.
Virginia Tech lost to Old Dominion in the first game of the season. The Hokies are one of 25 Power 5 teams to lose against their Group of 5 opponent.
East Carolina's Owen Daffer missed a crucial extra point in the final moments of the team's loss to NC State. Pat McAfee should host an annual retreat for kicking specialists who have been crushed after missing kicks in big moments. He made 95 percent of his attempts in 2021 during his true freshman season. ECU's forecast for the season won't change like WVU’s was in 2007 or Kyle Brotzman”s missed kick changing the arc of 2010 season, but a win over a top-15 team would have helped the Group of 5 conference program.
DJ Uiagalelei's freshman season was promising, but he's been a flop since. In the Chick-fil-A Classic Kickoff Game, he played well for Clemson, who won 41-10. Cade Klubnik took over for him late in the game. Clemson has a quarterback controversy. It's similar to last season's Oklahoma Sooner dynamic between Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams.
