This week in horse racing: spotlight on Gulfstream over New Year's Eve weekend
Gulfstream Park will host 10 stakes races on New Year's Eve and New Years Day. The Mucho Macho Man Stakes is the first step toward the 2023 Florida Derby. Art Collector and Colonel Liam are expected to be prepping for various stakes engagements.
Laurel Park's Christmastide program with a half-dozen stakes races will be offered this Friday. Oaklawn begins its Arkansas Derby series on Sunday with the Smarty Jones Stakes for newly turned 3-year-olds. Route runners are featured at Aqueduct with 1 1/8 miles stakes on Saturday and Sunday. Maryland-based trainer Dale Capuano has announced his retirement at year's end. Some of his stable will go to his nephew, trainer Phillip CapUano.
There are rescheduled stakes races at Laurel Park on Friday. Prince of Jericho is the local 2-year-old who has won his last two starts by 17 combined lengths. The field includes Grade 3 Nashua runner-up Full Moon Madness from New York.
