A pair of 7-7 teams need a win to stay in the playoff hunt on Thursday Night Football when the surging Los Angeles Rams host Derek Carr and the Saints at SoFi Stadium.

These two teams used to be division rivals back in the NFC West and have played some memorable games over the years. The home team has won each of the last eight meetings. The Saints downed the Rams at the Caesars Superdome last year.

LA may have finally shaken their Super Bowl hangover from last year. They’ve been one of the hottest teams in the NFL in recent weeks, going 4-1 in their last five games. They’re now tied for second place in the NFC West with Seattle and holding on to the seventh seed in the NFC playoffs.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford leads an offense that ranks No. 9 in the NFL in points scored, but has been on a tear lately as everyone has gotten healthy. Running back Kyren Williams missed four games with an injury, but has boosted the Rams backfield since his return. He’s 47 yards away from his first 1,000 yard season.

Stafford has a pair of top wide receivers in rookie Puka Nacua and veteran Cooper Kupp. Nacua has 87 catches on the year, which is 12th in the NFL, to go along with 1,163 yards. Kupp missed the early part of the year with an injury, but has come back with a vengeance and has 49 catches.

New Orleans has showed off a dominating defense each of the last two weeks, but they have played the woeful Panthers and Giants. The New Orleans defense is led by Pro Bowl linebacker Demario Davis, and the unit ranks sixth in the NFL in points allowed and hasn’t given up a TD in their last two games.

Offensively, the Saints have sputtered all season. Carr played his best game against the Giants with three TD passes, but a makeshift offensive line has struggled. The Saints still like to use Taysom Hill at quarterback/running back and receiver. He has the longest run of the year for the Saints with 21 yards.

The under makes sense in this one. Neither the Rams or Saints have a game-breaker at wide receiver or tight end that will go off. The Saints best wide receiver, Chris Olave, is likely a gametime decision as he deals with an injury.

The Saints have a legitimate defense, with a good secondary that can cover Nacua and Kupp, but it’s hard to see the Saints getting much offense. The Rams defensive line is still beastly and Carr has been sacked 26 times this year.

The Saints running game has struggled and likely will again against the Rams. The Saints are just 4-10 over/under this season while the Rams are 6-8. Throw in a short week for both teams to prepare and the under is a smart play.

The second-year pro out of Notre Dame has been a major reason for the Rams surge the last month. He’s had back-to-back 100 yard performances, including going for 152 in last week’s win over the Commanders.

People think of the Rams offense and think about Stafford’s arm angles and passing, but the Rams can run the ball too. They just use the short passing game like a running game.

With the Saints sitting back to try to cover Nacua and Kupp, lanes could open up for Williams to run against a light box. The Saints last gave up a 100-yard rusher a year ago to Atlanta’s Tyler Allgeier, but have struggled against the run this year, ranking 24th in the NFL.
