Tigers vs. Angels 9/15: Best odds, bets, and predictions

Oddsmakers price the Detroit Tigers as slight favorites on the road against the undermanned Angels on Friday night on the West Coast. Sportsbooks in Michigan are paying attention to the young players on Detroit’s roster late in the season, and noticing how competitive the team has been in September.

Caesars Sportsbook has a promo for new baseball betting customers in Michigan: Bet $50, Get $250 in Bonus Bets. All you must do is register a new account, make your deposit, and place a bet of $50 or more on any sporting event. If that bet loses, you get $250 in betting credits. If that bet wins, you get the $250 too. How’s that for a win-win?

Speaking of win-win, that’s what Detroit hopes to do all weekend in Anaheim. This is the start of a 10-game road trip, the final journey away from home for the Tigers in the 2023 season.

Game Details:

MLB Odds:

  • Runline: Tigers -1.5 (+150), Angels +1.5 (-178)

Tarik Skubal (5-3, 3.47 ERA, 75 K in 62.1 IP) vs. Griffin Canning (7-6, 4.34 ERA, 120 K in 110 IP)

With only a few more starts left in the season, Tarik Skubal is showing why some think he will be the ace of the Detroit staff in years to come. The left-hander has 16 strikeouts in his last two starts, both wins, when he allowed only two earned runs overall.

Skubal has benefitted as much as any pitcher from the tutelage of pitching coach Chris Fetter, who has gained a reputation as a “pitcher whisperer” of sorts. Skubal, at Fetter’s urging, is relying more heavily on his sinker and four-seam fastball as the season wears on. Most impressively, Skubal is throwing his four-seamer three miles per hour faster this year than he did in 2022 before an injury ended his season last August.

The Detroit southpaw has eight total matchups against Angels batters. That unfamiliarity should serve him well, and we expect his K total to be high in Anaheim on Friday evening.

Canning performed well in Detroit against the Tigers’ lineup in July, when he fanned eight and allowed just two runs in five frames. Detroit’s Jake Rogers went deep off Canning in that game.

The Angels swept the Tigers in the Motor City in July. The Halos outscored Detroit 24-10 in that series, but much has changed since. LA emptied its roster at the trade deadline, dumping a few big names. Mike Trout is hurt (again), and Shohei Ohtani is also nursing an injury (again). The latter is not on the Injured List, but he’s missed 10 straight games with an oblique strain. The pending free agent will also have to undergo Tommy John Surgery in the offseason. Without those two MVPs in the LA lineup, we like Detroit to have a good chance to sweep the Angels on their home field, a reversal of the team’s earlier series this season.

Odds for this MLB same-game parlay are +1100 from Caesars Sportsbook. Get their mobile sportsbook, and secure a bonus betting offer when you place a bet of at least $50.

We love Skubal’s chances to post 6+ K’s, while Carpenter and Meadows are a big part of the Detroit lineup, one with his hot bat, the other with his speed.

A winning $10 bet on this SGP would win you $110, or a $100 wager would net you $1,100.

  • Tarik Skubal Total Pitching Strikeouts Over 5.5
  • Kerry Carpenter To Score a Run*
  • Parker Meadows To Hit a Single

Carpenter is batting .348 since Aug. 5 and has at least one hit in 32 of his last 37 games.
