Tigers vs. Royals: Odds, picks and predictions 9/27/23

Tuesday’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals was going one way until it flipped. It changed on the result of back-to-back home runs by the Tigers in the eighth inning. Three outs in the top of the ninth gave Detroit the win.

Detroit’s 6-3 victory last night to start the final homestand of the season, also flipped the standings: the Tigers moved into second place, jumping ahead of Cleveland. This marks the first time since June 4th that Detroit has been in second place in the AL Central. It’s hard not to be optimistic seeing as how this team is playing hard through the end of the season. The Tigers are 15-9 since Aug. 31, tied for the third-best mark in the American League over that span.

Only five games remain in this season and the career of superstar Miguel Cabrera. Will Miggy go out with a splash? Will Detroit sweep the Royals? Will the weekend series against the Guardians determine second place? Tarik Skubal (7-3, 2.95 ERA, 94 K in 76.1 IP) vs. Jonathan Bowlan (First MLB start)

No one would blame Detroit manager A.J. Hinch for circling the date on his calendar when Tarik Skubal is scheduled to pitch. Few pitchers are seeing their stock rise as high and as fast as the Detroit left-hander. Skubal has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last five starts, lowering his ERA by more than a run. He’s posted 28 K’s in his last 19 innings. An argument can be made that since August 1, Skubal has been the best southpaw in the American League. With Tarik on the mound tonight, it tilts the odds heavily in Detroit’s favor.

Detroit will face Jonathan Bowlan, who is making his MLB debut. Bowlan is far from a top prospect in the Royals organization. He struggled to find consistency this season in Double-A and Triple-A. The right-hander is in his seventh professional season, and at age 26 his options are running out. This season, he’s worked on throwing more strikes, but that’s led to a startling 19 homer runs allowed in just 102 innings. Good news for him: the Tigers rank next-to-last in baseball in OPS, and even though a few bats have been heating up, the Detroit offense is still far too much “swing and miss,” and not enough “connect and celebrate.” Betting tip: Bowlan likely will not go more than once through the order.

Spencer Torkelson drove in two runs on Tuesday, giving him 90 for the season. He’s the first Tiger to get to that mark since Nicholas Castellanos in 2017… Akil Baddoo hit his second pinch-hit home run of the season in Tuesday’s 6-3 win. He’s batting .308 in that role… Likely we won’t see Javier Báez in the lineup, as he went hitless last night to see his average drop to .219, and also made a mistake in the field, though he was fortunate not to be charged with his 20th error… Bobby Witt Jr. hit .326 in July and August, but he’s cooled this month, and has only one home run since Sept. 1… The OVER has hit in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games played at Comerica Park.

Skubal is dealing right now, and he matches up well against the Royals lineup. However, take pause: in July he allowed seven earned runs in four innings against this team in Kansas City. We feel strongly enough about the lefty that we feel fine betting $210 to win $100.

As of early Wednesday, none of the Michigan sports betting sites had parlay bets listed. But, we did find a second bet for “Bet of the Day” that we feel very good about Tigers to score first and win at +120 from PointsBet. PointsBet is rewarding new customers with a 10 x $100 Second Chance Bet. The value of the bonus bets or “second chance bets” are based on your first wager, if it fails to win.
