Tigers vs Angels: Odds, picks and predictions 7/27/23

If there’s one thing we can count on, when there’s a rain cloud hovering above, the Detroit Tigers will cancel their game. That’s what happened on Wednesday when more than a few thousand raindrops coalesced in the skies.

As a result, the Tigers and Halos will play a traditional doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. We have odds, a daily bet and a game pick below.

Two games will be played back-to-back at Comerica Park today, and baseball’s biggest star will be on the mound for one of them. LA’s Shohei Ohtani will start the second game for the Angels, and he’ll also wield his home-run-hitting bat as well, of course.

Not one, but two chances present themselves for baseball bettors on Thursday.

Michael Lorenzen (5-6, 3.49 ERA, 76 K in 100.2 IP) vs Shohei Ohtani (5-7, 4.16 ERA, 77 K in 93 IP)

We’ll know if Lorenzen is on early: his ERA in the first two innings is 5.29. From the 3rd inning on, Lorenzen has a 2.82 ERA. His strikeout rate has dipped a little as of late, which is noteworthy if you lurk the strikeout over/under prop bets.

Ohtani is both baseball’s best slugger, and also one of the ten best pitchers in the game. That makes him not only a unicorn, to steal his coolest nickname, but it makes him a white unicorn with a pearl horn. He’ll start Game 1 following three shaky starts. Ohtani has allowed 14 ER in his last 16.1 innings. But, the tall righty from Japan is capable of mowing down the Detroit lineup. Look long at his K prop bet: the Over 6.5, with odds not available as we went to the deadline.

Matt Manning (5-6, 3.49 ERA, 76 K in 100.2 IP) vs Patrick Sandoval (5-7, 4.16 ERA, 77 K in 93 IP)

Manning will start the second game on regular rest. He was on a string of fine starts until his last outing when he only tossed two innings before leaving the game due to a rain delay. His K rate has been low, so avoid that prop bet. We expect him to come back strong-armed after a short outing the last time he took the hill.

Sandoval has issued seven free passes in his last 12 innings. His staple pitch is his slider. In 2023, he’s thrown 473 sliders, the most of any of his pitches, and has yet to allow a home run. Will Sandoval be effective Thursday following a layoff? With 6+ days of rest this season, he has a 3.38 ERA, as opposed to 4.57 with shorter rest. This time he’s on long rest.

Los Angeles Angels -1.5 / Over 7.5 (+250 from FanDuel MI)

We lean toward Ohtani in Game 1 and look for both offenses to put up crooked numbers. That makes a $100 bet on this Pick of the Day, a $250 winning ticket.

The most likely outcome today is a split, and if you want a Tigers win to bet on, take Game 2, when Lorenzen, the lone Detroit All-Star, makes what will likely be his final start in the Old English D. He’ll probably be flipped to a contender before next week’s trade deadline.

The prop bets for Thursday’s doubleheader won’t be priced until closer to the first pitch, we don’t have them yet. But our Daily Pick bet from above is technically a parlay, so here we go:

  • LA Angels -1.5 on Run Line
  • OVER 7.5 Runs
