Tigers vs. A’s: Odds, picks and predictions 7/6/23

The Detroit Tigers finish up a three-game series against the A’s on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park. The Tigers have lost the first two of this series, which only serves to cause angst, as the A’s are the worst team in baseball.

On Thursday, the Tigers hand the ball to their lone All-Star representative: Michael Lorenzen. The team needs a win to have a chance to salvage a successful home stand before the break. On Friday, Toronto comes into Detroit for the start of a three-gamer.

MLB odds

  • Run line: Tigers -1.5 (+130), A’s +1.5 (-156)
  • Total: Over/Under 8.5 Runs (-110/-110)

Detroit is again favored to win over the woeful A’s. You’ll need to bet $164 to win $100 on the moneyline and Detroit. If you want to make a run line wager on the Tigers, you’ll need to give away 1.5 runs. This means the Tigers would need to win by two runs on Thursday. A $50 bet on those odds would win you $65 if Detroit wins by at least two runs. Make sure to also check what other bonuses or promotions you can take advantage of on FanDuel.

Michael Lorenzen (2-6, 4.28 ERA, 62 K in 82 IP) vs Hogan Harris (2-2, 5.17 ERA, 29 K in 38.1 IP)

When the AL All-Star team was announced last week, Lorenzen was a surprise addition to the pitching staff. While he’s been healthy, Lorenzen has been far from stellar. Only two pitchers in MLB have more starts with five earned runs allowed or more than Lorenzen’s six. His six quality starts are tied with Eduardo Rodriguez for the team lead. But just as often. Lorenzen can get smacked around like a pickleball at a senior center.

The A’s have not seen Lorenzen this season. But, so far this series’ logic has been thrown out the window. Still, following his surprise selection to the All-Star team, perhaps Lorenzen will be “up” in his up-and-down cycle.

Oakland’s Hogan Harris is making just his fourth start. He’s never faced Detroit, but if there’s someone he reminds us of, it’s James Paxton, the tall lefty who has been in the AL for about a decade with several teams. His four-seam fastball is his best pitch, and he elicits weak contact on it, but he doesn’t get a lot of K’s.

Oakland’s Manny Piña is 4-for-6 against Lorenzen, and will certainly be in the lineup… Seth Brown, however, is 0-for-9 against the Detroit starter… Miguel Cabrera’s hot bat is earning him more playing time. The former MVP is hitting .417 over the last week. Manager A.J. Hinch, desperate for baserunners, has played Cabrera in both of the games in the Oakland series… Spencer Torkelson has hits in six of his last seven games, including five for extra bases.

Tigers -1.5 Runs (+130 from FanDuel MI Sportsbook) … Bet $50 on the run line and if Detroit wins by at least two runs, you get $115, including your stake.

The odds for our Thursday Tigers same-game-parlay is +1136 from FanDuel.

  • Detroit Tigers Win By 1-2 Runs, FIRST 5 INNINGS WINNING MARGIN (5-WAY)
  • Detroit Tigers -1.5 run line
  • Tie 1ST INNING RESULT

The first leg requires the Tigers to be ahead by either one or two runs after 5 innings. The second leg is the run line, and the third calls for a tie after one full inning. A $20 winning bet on this same-game parlay would win $227.20 plus the stake. Or win $568 on a $50 bet with FanDuel on the MLB SGP.
