Matt Manning (5-4, 3.93 ERA, 45 K in 71 IP) vs. Clarke Schmidt (8-8, 4.51 ERA, 126 K in 129.2 IP)
We’re being told Matt Manning is healthy to make this start, even though the tall right-hander felt discomfort in his lower back last start six days ago. Given the recent history of injuries in the Detroit rotation, that makes us pause in regard to Manning’s potential positive impact on this matinee game.
Still, Manning has produced remarkable results in his most recent three outings: one earned run in 17 ⅔ innings; and only eight hits. But, Manning has seen his K rate plummet in the last few weeks. The 25-year-old hasn’t thrown as many as 120 innings in a season since 2019. While his clean-shaven, babyface has been around the Motor City for a few years, he still hasn’t shown he can withstand the rigors of a long baseball season.
The Tigers lineup is back in a funk, with only eight runs scored in its last five games. Much of that is coming from solo home runs. Detroit is failing to get two-out hits with runners on, an important facet of a functioning offense. Against Schmidt, they will face a soft-tosser who relies on the deception of his sweeper, as well as the spin of his sinker, cutter, and curve. Detroit hasn’t faced a pitcher like Schmidt all season. He uses his four pitches almost equally and rarely touches 93 mph on the radar gun. The lineup will need to work deep into counts and track his breaking pitches.
Spencer Torkelson has smacked nine homers in August, his best output for any month in his career. The 23-year-old is slugging .573 in August, and seems to be growing into his role as the run producer in the middle of the lineup… Gleyber Torres had two more hits and his second home run of this series on Wednesday… Aaron Judge fanned three times in Wednesday’s game, each time on pitches tailing away on the lower outside part of the strike zone. The Tigers pitchers will need to maintain focus to keep the ball away from the big guy, or he can burn them with the long ball.
Total Runs Under 7.5 (+114)
No, the odds are not fantastic, but +114 is a winner of $57 on a $50 bet or $114 on a $100 wager. We like Schmidt to keep the struggling Tigers lineup off-balance, and Manning to be stingy again. This is a getaway day for both teams, which means both are heading out of town immediately after the game. That can lead to short at-bats, first-pitch swinging, and a low-scoring output.
We’re not going to get complicated with our SGP today: two bets, and we feel good about both. Torkelson is getting lots of extra-base hits lately, and all we need is a gapper for a double to meet that parlay leg requirement. We are quite confident that Manning will be under five K’s, as his strikeout total has been less than that in each of his last four starts.
