Top 2023 Tingle Creek odds and tips

The cold snap may have taken away Newcastle’s marquee fixture last week, but it’s all steam ahead for a stellar afternoon at Sandown on Saturday, which will be headlined by the Grade 1 Betfair Tingle Creek Chase. 

The race is one of the key pointers for next year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and the Nicky Henderson-trained Jonbon will be looking to outline his credentials against a top-class field which includes the likes of Captain Guinness, Nube Negra and last year’s winner Edwardstone.

It looks set to be a stellar day of racing at Sandown Park, with superstar Constitution Hill seemingly set to run in the rearranged Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle, where his opponents could include his stablemate Shishkin.

With so much to process, we’ve taken a look at all of the latest Tingle Creek odds and Tingle Creek betting offers and put everything you need below in this handy guide. 

The Tingle Creek is one of the most prestigious chase races of the entire season and as you’d expect, a top-class field is set to line up for the Grade 1 contest. The betting is dominated by one name at the time of writing, though with some big names in opposition, we’ve listed the full Tingle Creek betting odds below. All prices are subject to change.

There’s no doubt that all the attention will be on Jonbon on Saturday, with Nicky Henderson’s charge a commanding 1-3 favourite for the Grade 1 contest with sponsors Betfair at the time of writing. 

Plenty of punters will likely be eyeing up a double with stablemate Constitution Hill – who is also a commanding favourite on the card – though it may be worth taking on Jonbon with a top-class rival, who makes plenty of appeal at the prices. 

There can be no doubting the credentials of Jonbon, who will arrive here as a commanding odds-on favourite after making a stunning reappearance in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham last month when defeating two of this field. However, in what could prove to be a highly tactical affair, it may be worth taking him on at the prices with the reopposing Edwardstone.

The nine-year-old was an outstanding winner of this race 12 months ago when defeating a field which included Greaneteen and Shishkin by nine lengths and things didn’t really go to plan since, falling at Kempton Park over Christmas and losing out in a head-bobber in the rearranged Clarence House Chase at Cheltenham in January. 

Those runs were followed up by a lacklustre fifth in the Champion Chase itself in March, though he’s worth forgiving for that run after a far-from-ideal build-up. And while he was ultimately well-beaten on return at Cheltenham, there were certainly signs that he was heading back in the right direction, when shaping well behind Jonbon for a long way before tiring late on. 

The 8/1 available on Alan King’s charge would feel big if he can return to his very best here – particularly when you consider that he’s unbeaten when completing on right-hand tracks – and at the prices it could be worth having a small bet on Edwardstone to record a fourth Grade 1 win over fences at 8/1 with William Hill. 

This year’s renewal of the Betfair Tingle Creek looks set to be a fantastic one, as Jonbon bids to rubber stamp his credentials for next year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival for the Nicky Henderson team. 

There’s no shortage of top-class names in opposition, however, with the charge led by last year’s winner Edwardstone and the Champion Chase runner-up Captain Guinness. With that in mind, we’ve listed the chances of each of the six Tingle Creek runners below. Please note that all odds and jockey bookings listed are subject to change. 

Enjoyed a lofty reputation before even making the racecourse thanks to being a full brother to the champion chaser Douvan and has seldom struggled to live up to the hype, winning Grade 1 contests over both hurdles and fences. 

Enjoyed a near flawless first season as a chaser last term, when finding only the excellent El Fabiolo too good in the Arkle Trophy at the Festival, before subsequently winning top-level contests at both Aintree and Sandown. Arrives here on the back of routing a top-class field on return in the Grade 2 Shloer Chase at Cheltenham last month and will be difficult to stop, though heavy ground would ask something new of him should the forecast rain materialise.

High-class Irish raider who boasts five wins over fences, with four of those coming at graded level. Rarely runs a bad race and took his form to a new level at the Cheltenham Festival in March, when an excellent second behind Energumene in the Champion Chase. 

Followed that up with another excellent run behind Jonbon in the Celebration Chase here in April and made a winning reappearance in a Grade 2 contest at Naas last month. Brings solid form to the table though he regularly finds one too good at the top level and it would be a surprise if he was able to overturn the form with Jonbon here.

Top-class chaser on his day with three wins at the top level under his belt, including when an outstanding nine-length victor of this race 12 months ago. Things have admittedly not gone to plan since, including when well held in the Champion Chase in March, but showed plenty of signs of recovery when second to Jonbon on reappearance last month. 

He’ll have to take another big step forward to reverse that form here, but he is unbeaten when completing on right-handed tracks and it would be no surprise should he take a significant step forward on Saturday – at a track where he is 2/2 at Grade 1 level. 

A smart novice last term, winning three times from six starts including at Grade 2 level. Has shown a real proficiency for handicap company and has taken his record to 3/3 in that sphere with back-to-back victories in highly competitive affairs at Ascot so far this season. Deserves a crack at this with conditions no issue, though he was well held by Jonbon in a Grade 1 novice here 12 months ago and will need a career-best effort to take this.

Improved at a rate of knots as a novice last term, winning back-to-back handicaps either side of the New Year before being ruled out of the Cheltenham Festival. Looked as though he was about to make a winning return in a highly competitive handicap at Cheltenham in October before falling at the last and rates as an intriguing outsider – for all that he would need to take a significant step forward.

High-class chaser on his day, with three victories over fences at the Grade 2 level. Largely struggled at the top level last term, being pulled-up in the Champion Chase and was well held behind Jonbon on return at Cheltenham last month. Would need to take a significant step forward here to feature, on conditions which aren’t guaranteed to suit. 

Placing a bet on the Betfair Tingle Creek is a simple process, even if you are new to betting on sports. To help you out, we’ve put together a step-by-step guide below.

The Tingle Creek is one of the most prestigious chase races of the year, with plenty of winners going on to become Champion Chasers.

Some legendary names have won the Tingle Creek during its history, particularly since it was upgraded to Grade 1 status in 1994. 

The race is seen as a key pointer for the Champion Chase and the most successful trainer in Tingle Creek’s history is the 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls, with 12 wins. Nicholls’ 12 winners in the race have come with Flagship Uberalles (in 1999), Cenkos (2002), Kauto Star (2005 and 2006), Twist Magic (2007 and 2009), Master Minded (2008 and 2010), Dodging Bullets (2014), Politologue (2017 and 2020) and Greaneteen (2021).

The most successful jockey in the Tingle Creek is the legendary rider Richard Dunwoody, who has five wins in the race. Dunwoody’s five Tingle Creek winners have come with Lefrak City (in 1985), Waterloo Boy (1991 and 1992) and Sound Man (1995 and 1996).

The Tingle Creek is a Grade 1 chase, which is traditionally held at Sandown Park on the first Saturday in December. The race is run over a distance of one mile, seven furlongs and 119 yards and is seen as one of the first big clues of the season for the Queen Mother Champion Chase – run over 80 yards further on the second day of the Cheltenham Festival each March. 

Tingle Creek has a rich history which dates back more than 50 years. The race has traditionally been run at Sandown Park in Surrey and started life as a handicap, before being upgraded to Grade 1 status in 1994. 

Since then, the race has established itself as one of the key pointers for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham, with some excellent winners in that time. Previous winners of the Tingle Creek include chasing greats Moscow Flyer, Flagship Uberalles, Kauto Star, Master Minded and Altior.
