Toronto Raptors trade odds: Top landing spots for VanVleet, Trent ahead of NBA trade deadline

The NBA trade deadline on February 9 is fast approaching and it could usher in some serious changes for the Toronto Raptors.

The latest: The rumour mill works overtime when trade deadline season comes around, and not all reports carry weight. But both halves of the Raptors’ starting backcourt — Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr. — are subjects of transactional scuttlebutt, and we’re here to assess their odds of being moved.

A decade has passed since the Raptors threw themselves into a full-bore rebuild. But maybe it’s time to walk that path again.

From 2015-19, the Raptors won eight playoff series and an NBA title. Now they’re on track to miss the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

Some roster churn could be good for this team, and VanVleet and Trent are arguably the most logical pieces to move. Both have player options for next season, which means they could leave this summer without Toronto recouping any picks or players in return.

Toronto Raptors (+110)

The reason the Raptors are favoured to retain VanVleet through the deadline might be that his value took a hit this season.

VanVleet’s 19.1 points per game might not look out of place, but his efficiency numbers leave much to be desired. He’s posting the worst field goal percentage (38.8%), effective field goal percentage (48.1%) and 3-point percentage (34.4%) since he was a rookie seven years ago.

Trading VanVleet would be an obvious sign that this team is ready for a more ardent tank, but Toronto might still be hesitant to hand the keys over to Malachi Flynn and/or Dalano Banton at point guard.

Phoenix Suns (+300)

If the Suns are serious about keeping their window of contention open, an aging Chris Paul might present too much of a risk as the team’s big-minutes point guard.

NBA insider Marc Stein noted that while Paul has missed nearly half of his team’s games this year due to injury, the Suns have begun “assessing their post-Paul future” and identified VanVleet as a potential trade target (along with Charlotte’s Terry Rozier and New York’s Immanuel Quickley).

Any other team (+175)

Given that every market for VanVleet’s landing spot comes at plus odds, it might not be a bad idea to cast a wide net.

Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes reported that VanVleet recently parted ways with his agents at Par-Lay Sports & Entertainment, which could indicate additional changes in the point guard’s career.

At the very least, VanVleet is likely seeking new counsel ahead of his player opt-out when the season ends. But maybe he’ll have an additional change of scenery before then, too.

Among the teams not on our board, the Clippers received a bit of VanVleet buzz when Kevin O’Connor from The Ringer reported that they’re interested in the point guard.

Gary Trent Jr. trade odds

Raptors (-121)

Like VanVleet, the shortest odds for Trent belong to the team already rostering him.

So far, Trent hasn’t generated the same volume of trade chatter as VanVleet, which could explain why the Raptors are minus-odds favourites to keep him. Of course, there are still almost two full weeks for that to change.

Any other team (+175)

One of the very few Trent-related trade rumours in the ether comes from LJ Ellis of SpursTalk. Ellis reported that the Raptors have made multiple offers to the Spurs for Jakob Poeltl and that the one gaining the most traction involves Trent.

We’re not necessarily taking that report to the bank, but hey, it’s out there.

And although the spiralling Spurs might be a strange trade partner, it makes sense that tons of teams would ask about Trent. He’s scoring at a career-high clip (18.7 points/game) and is shooting 41.1% from 3-point range since Dec. 23.
