Tottenham 'blackmailed' Bayern Munich into signing Harry Kane on club-record transfer, claims Lothar Matthaus

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus believes the club were 'blackmailed' into paying a club-record fee to sign Harry Kane.

After lengthy negotiations, the Bundesliga champions and Tottenham agreed a fee rising to more than £100million.

Kane instantly made his mark on his league debut - chipping in with a goal and an assist in a 4-0 away win at Werder Bremen.

The Bavarian outfit had been desperate to bring in a new centre-forward following Robert Lewandowski's £42m switch to Barcelona last year.

And 1990 World Cup winner Matthaus, who made 410 appearances for Bayern, believes his former employers have paid over the odds for Kane.

After having several offers knocked back by Spurs, Bayern gave in to Daniel Levy's demands to smash their record transfer by over £32m.

Their previous record stood at £68.3m when they prised Lucas Hernandez away from Atletico Madrid in 2019.

Matthaus told Sky90: "Those in charge at Bayern were and are 100 per cent convinced of Harry Kane.

"And that's why they stretched themselves, that's why they pushed their limits.

"And maybe Bayern has also - in quotation marks - been a little blackmailed by Tottenham.

"Another million more and a little bit more. They wanted this player.

"And I say - €100m [initial £85m fee] for a 30-year-old - Lewandowski was three years older when he left and went to Barcelona for around €50m [£42m] - I now assume that it will pay off.”

Despite the high fee, boss Thomas Tuchel is delighted by the deal as he praised Kane's deadly finishing following his first goal.

The ex-Chelsea manager told reporters: "If you see him finishing in training you know why he finishes in the matches because he does all the time the same.

"It's so clinical, it's so calm. such a lot of composure. The guy is a top guy. He's a top player.

"He's a fantastic personality and makes players around him better, so, very happy he's here. Fantastic finish, good goal."

Next up for Kane is a clash to face Augsburg, who drew 4-4 against Borussia Monchengladbach over the weekend, at the Allianz Arena on Sunday.
