After two weeks with their feet up, Tottenham Hotspur must be chomping at the bit to get back out there.

Due to face Chelsea last weekend, Ange Postecoglou’s side had their game postponed when their opponents advanced to the EFL Cup final.

There was both good and bad news for Tottenham as they watched the other action unfold.

Aston Villa moved five points clear of Spurs with a 4-2 victory over Nottingham Forest. But Manchester United remain three points adrift of fifth-placed Tottenham after falling to a 2-1 home defeat by Fulham.

With five teams likely to qualify for next season’s expanded version of the Champions League, Spurs are in a reasonably strong position heading into the weekend.

They have a game in hand on United and could be about to move further clear of Erik ten Hag’s team, who face Manchester City on Sunday.

Tottenham are ahead of schedule under Postecoglou, who inherited a team that slumped to an eighth-place finish last term and then lost their greatest ever player in Harry Kane.

It was not a particularly favourable situation, but Spurs came flying out of the blocks and were the Premier League leaders until early November.

Yet it is also clear that Tottenham remain a work in progress. Their performances have dipped in recent weeks. Results held up for a while, but Spurs lost 2-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers in their last outing. They have won just two of their last six meetings with top-flight opposition.

Even though Champions League qualification was not seen as a must at the start of Postecoglou’s maiden campaign in the dugout, it would be a huge disappointment if Spurs were to miss out from here.

A crunch clash with Aston Villa awaits next weekend, but Tottenham must first take care of business against Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace have a miserable record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and this could be another disappointing afternoon in north London.

Oliver Glasner got his Crystal Palace tenure off to a winning start last weekend, as goals from Chris Richards, Jordan Ayew and Jean-Philippe Mateta gave the Eagles a 3-0 victory over struggling Burnley.

It was a much-needed triumph for a team that had only won two of its previous 14 Premier League games. Palace now have an eight-point buffer above the bottom three.

Glasner is hopeful that Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi will be able to feature in some capacity on Saturday, but the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for his new team in recent years.

Palace have lost all five visits to Tottenham’s new ground and the hosts are justifiably odds-on favourites to come out on top this weekend too.

The visitors could find the back of the net, though. Tottenham have conceded in each of their last eight games. Four of their last five opponents have scored twice against them.

Postecoglou will no doubt have spent the last fortnight thinking about how his team can start games quicker in front of their own fans.

In each of their last three home games, against Brentford, Brighton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, Spurs have begun slowly.

They found themselves behind at half-time in all three matches, so Palace could frustrate Tottenham in the opening 45 minutes.

Glasner is a more proactive manager than Roy Hodgson, but the former Eintracht Frankfurt head coach has not had long to get his ideas across. Without Eze and Michael Olise, this Palace team is not particularly well equipped to play expansive football.

Only Sheffield United have scored fewer first-half goals than Palace. Still, the visitors to north London could keep the score level until the break.

Son Heung-min has lost ground in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.

His participation at the Asian Cup meant he missed a handful of Tottenham games in January and February, with his last goal for the club coming in a 3-1 defeat of Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve. He is now five strikes behind Erling Haaland at the top of the charts.

With Richarlison having endured a tough couple of games, Tottenham need Son to step up to the plate.

The South Korea international has regularly done that in meetings with Crystal Palace. He has never lost a Premier League game to the south Londoners, while his 15 top-flight appearances against them have produced 13 wins and eight goals.

Son scored against Palace in the reverse fixture while being deployed through the middle. He will probably start on the left this time, but we fancy his chances of introducing the ball to the net once more.
