UEFA League Rankings See Ligue 1 Replaced By Eredivisie in Top 5
The latest UEFA League rankings have seen the Netherlands overtake France, bases on performances of clubs in European competition over the last five seasons.
Although Ligue 1 still ranks within the top five leagues on UEFA’s most up-to-date coefficient rankings, it has been displaced by Eredivisie clubs when looking across the last five years.
Paris Saint Germain are the one and only club since Monaco in 2004 to reach the final of the Champions League, while Marseille’s appearance in the 2018 Europa League final was also the first since they themselves reached it in 2004.
Meanwhile, recent successes for Dutch sides in Europe, namely Feyenoord’s run to the Europa Conference League final in 2022, as well as AZ Alkmaar reaching the semi-finals this season, have scored the Eredivisie a sizeable amount of points.
UEFA 5-Year League Rankings
The competitiveness beyond the top clubs in Ligue 1 has been the topic of conversation for a number of years.
Many fans have previously called on UEFA to change their ranking system in order for Portugal, Belgium and Netherlands’ top leagues to be properly represented.
Coefficient rankings have more of a real-world application, with a club’s given points tally able to decide which pot they are placed prior to the group stage draws.
Elsewhere, Rangers’ run to the Europa League final last season has gone a long way in boosting Scotland’s 5-year rankings, where they now sit in ninth place.
Portugal, Belgium and Austria make up the rest of the top 10, but it is England who reign supreme as expected after West Ham and Manchester City lifted two of the three available cups.
