Leylah Fernandez won't be able to escape the spotlight when she steps on the tennis court at the US Open.

Staging one of the year's biggest upsets at the 2021 edition, when she finished as the runner-up after beating former world No.1 Naomi Osaka in the semi-final, has earned the Canadian 20-year-old plenty of followers in New York. And lately she is looking poised to dazzle them once again.

Currently ranked world No.71, Fernandez is turning around a rough start to the 2023 season with a mini winning streak before the iconic Grand Slam tournament.

On Wednesday (23 August), the 2020 Olympian beat long-time rival Clara Tauson of Denmark on her second day of play at Tennis in the Land. Fernandez claimed a 6-0 walkover in the first set to advance to the quarter-finals.

With a career's best singles ranking of 13, Fernandez is now looking to climb back up the ranks in an attempt to make history at the US Open once again.
