Victoria Derby Day is on Saturday before the first Tuesday in November. It's the highlight of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington. The race is the oldest in Australia and is a gruelling test for young stayers. It was first held in 1855.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a big event for young sprinters. The Empire Rose Stake is for fillies and mares. La Crique is an exciting Kiwi 4YO mare. There is the last chance to win a ticket to the Melbourne Cup. The barrier draw for the race was held three days before the actual race. It was badly done. Some horses were allocated the wrong barrier. They were re-arranged. This year's favourite LaCrique went from gate 8 to 10. Daisies went to 2, Belle Plaisir from 4 and 4 again.

Derby Day starts Flemington’s four-day Melbourne Cup carnival. It also features Cup Day on Tuesday, Oaks Day and Mackinnon Stakes Day.

$7 million is at stake for each of the Derby and the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Sydney might have the Golden Eagle on Saturday, but it's worth $10 million.

The first race is at 12.20 pm (AEDT), the last race at 5.40 pm. The Derby starts at 4. 20 pm AEDP.

The winner of the LEXUS ARCHER STAKES earns the last ticket into the Melbourne Cup. SUREFIRE is a British import from the Chris Waller stable. Alegron is from Godolphin and has won here at 2800m. Chapada is an old trier who could take fourth place. The field has been reduced by scratchings. The winner will be announced on Tuesday. Jenny Jerome could start favourite for WAKEFUL STAKES (2000m). Group 2. Jenny Jerome is by the same man who bred Winx. So Dazzling is prepared in Sydney by John Sargent. Whakamana is fitter and better than her last start. Let's Be Free is a good value. Think Rain is expensive.

RACE 6 is Coolmore STUD STAKES (1200m). Group 1. $2,000,00. A big 17-horse field with plenty of chances. Home Affairs won last year and is now a stud stud. Jacquinot is second favourite. IN SECRET is a deserved favourite as she seeks to emulate Sunlight in 2018 and September Run in 2020. Godolphin/James Cummings are winning everything at the moment. The Everest is the main race. It's a 1200m straight course with no corners. There are no places to slow down.

RACE 8: 5.00 pm: EMPIRE ROSE STAKES (1600m). Group 1. Formerly known as the Myer Classic, it was changed to honour that great, great big mare, Empire Rose, who won the Melbourne Cup in 1988. LA CRIQUE is a 4-year-old maret who's a buzz horse of Australasia. Kiku hails from the Chris Waller yard and won a 1300m G2 in Sydney first-up.

Victoria Derby Day is for three-year-olds at set weights. It's for a capacity 16-horse field. The favourite has only won this race twice since 2006. There are only a few stand-out chances in the race. Sharpn’ Smart is an outstanding Kiwi conveyance. He's won four from seven races. BERKELEY SQUARE is another classy type. She's bred by Gerry Harvey of Harvey Norman fame. They both won their first G1 last Saturday. Victoria Derby is one of the oldest races in Australia.
