‘Want to keep playing at high level’: Martinez on turning down Saudi offer

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez revealed that he had a lucrative offer to play in Saudi Arabia but chose to reject in order "to continue playing at a high level".

An influx of big names in the middle eastern nation took place following Cristiano Ronaldo's signing by Al-Nassr at the end of last year. While several aging superstars were destined to follow suit, the pull of cash-rich Saudi Pro League clubs extending to players in their prime, who were predicted to keep plying their trade in top European leagues, has been evident.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Martinez said, "Offers from Saudi Arabia? It's true, the huge proposals have arrived.

"Why do so many young people go to Saudi Arabia? It's a lot of money, but in the end it depends on the person. I chose this [to reject the offer] since I want to keep playing at a high level."

In Argentina's World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar last year, Martinez played his part as a supporting cast. Following the showpiece event, he remained instrumental in Inter bagging two domestic cup titles and, against the odds, on becoming Champions League runners-up last season.

"I'm the captain here, Inter is my second home. I have felt loved here since day one and I'm proud to be here," said the 25-year-old, who also has his sights set on the two upcoming major assignments for La Albiceleste, starting with the Copa America in USA next year.

"I'm already thinking about preparing well for the next Copa América and the World Cup."
