The Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks meet on Saturday.
The pregame narrative: Both teams are playing their second game in as many nights and Atlanta is a 2.5-point favourite as of 10:30 a.m. ET. The Hawks have been completely unreliable in that spot, which has me backing the Warriors against the spread and Jonathan Kuminga to fill the stat sheet.
NBA oddsas of 10:39 a.m. on 02/03/2024.
Warriors vs. Hawks picks
Best Bet: Warriors +2.5 (-113)
Atlanta is on a three-game winning streak but I still have no faith in the team to cover tonight.
The Hawks are a league-worst 13-35 ATS and are a horrific 6-19 ATS when pegged as the favourite.
The main reason for their shortcomings is defence. Atlanta is 27th in defensive rating (119.6) and allows opponents to shoot 50.3% from the field, which is the second-highest mark in basketball.
That isn't a good sign considering Golden State's recent form.
The Warriors are 3-2 in their last five games with both losses coming by a single point. During this stretch they're averaging a blistering 130.2 PPG.
Steph Curry is on fire and Kuminga has turned into the team's clear-cut No. 2 scoring option — but more on him later.
Golden State has also been the league's best ATS team on the road this year, covering in 63.2% of its games away from Chase Center. That includes a 9-3 ATS record when pegged as a road underdog.
Key stat: Golden State has covered this number in five straight games.
Quick pick
Kuminga over 31.5 PRA (-118): Kuminga has had an up-and-down season with the Warriors but the power forward has really hit his stride lately. And who knew all it would take was getting a haircut?
Look good, feel good, play good, right?
Joking aside, Kuminga has been on fire the past eight games. He's averaging 25.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists a night (34.4 PRA) and has cleared this total in five straight outings.
Now he gets to play against a Hawks defence which allows the third-most points and fifth-most rebounds per game to opposing power forwards, per Fantasy Pros. Sign me up.
