Warwick Farm preview: Mark Newnham keen on Storm The Ramparts

Trainer Mark Newnham is hoping to see promising type Storm The Ramparts put himself in the frame for a Golden Slipper tilt with victory at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Storm The Ramparts holds nominations for the Slipper and Inglis Sires’ but would need a strong performance second-up in the Furphy Maiden Plate (1000m) to warrant chasing those lofty heights.

“He’d have to win and if you win a two-year-old maiden now, your choices are all the Golden Slipper lead ups because that’s what you are eligible for because there is nothing else for those sort of horses,” Newnham said.

“If he happened to win, he would probably find himself at Canberra (in the Black Opal) or a Pago Pago.”

Storm The Ramparts showed potential in his only race start when finishing third in the lucrative The Debut at the Gold Coast shortly before the Magic Millions card was postponed due to the Heavy 10 track.

With summer storms forecast in Sydney in the 24 hours before the race, Storm The Ramparts could again face a rain affected surface in Sydney.

“He handled it in patches at the Gold Coast,” Newnham said.

“Through the worst section of the track he lost ground but once he got balanced again in the straight Josh (Parr) said he got through it quite well.

“I think between the 600m and 400m he struggled a bit through it and you could see that on the day, he lost ground at that point but picked up again in the straight and he the line really well.”

Newnham gave Storm The Rampart a 10-day freshen up after his trip to the Gold Coast and the Headwater colt has since had a 740m trial.

TAB rate him a $4.80 chance in his latest assignment behind only Introducing ($2.40 fav) and Helldancer ($4.40) with Newnham setting stable apprentice Tyler Schiller with the task of navigating a path from barrier eight of eight.

“It’s a little bit of a tricky gate with the speed drawn low so I think I will have to leave it to Tyler how he rides him and based on where he jumps,” Newnham said.

“It’s ideal to be behind the lead with a bit of cover but with a small field like that it might not be possible.”

Newnham will chase an early double on the midweek card with the promising Cool Jakey ready to make his debut in the Drinkwise Maiden Plate (1200m).

Cool Jakey sits on the second line of betting at $3.60 for his debut after putting together a pair of nice trial performances in the lead up to his debut.

“I would be disappointed if he didn’t run one or two,” Newnham said.

“He is still quite a green horse, this is the first preparation we have really got to gallop him.

“He has just had a few immaturity issues, nothing major, so if he can run up to what he has shown in his work with a lack of experience, I would expect him to at least run top three.

“He has got a very relaxed nature, just flops around in his work but when you ask for an effort he responds.”

Schiller will also pilot Cool Jakey, which has been tasked with toppling $1.50 elect Pereille.

CURTIS’ OAKS WINNER’S SISTER IS READY TO GO BOOM

Lasqueti Boom will take the first significant step towards matching her famous Group 1 winning sister when the Lee and Cherie Curtis-trained galloper returns at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

The Spirit Of Boom filly is out of Supriym Story, which also produced the Curtis’ former VRC Oaks winner Lasqueti Spirit.

Lasqueti Spirit scored a famous win at 100-1 odds in the 2015 Oaks after Brenton Avdulla pulled off a daring frontrunning ride, bowing to the crowd as the filly saluted.

The Curtis team hope to put Lasqueti Boom on a Group 1 path of her own this autumn with a date with Sydney’s Australian Oaks on the agenda if all goes to plan for the filly.

“She is not as dour as Lasqueti Spirit so we had question marks if she would run a mile and a half but looking at her recent trial, she was a bit dourer,” Lee Curtis said.

“Being only lightly raced, we are still learning about her.

“She is similar to her sister, not as big or robust but a little bit more turn of speed.

“She has a very good constitution, that’s something she will share with her sister.

“Lasqueti Spirit was about 15kg heavier at the same age so she has some similarities and is a lovely girl to handle, a pleasure to have around.”

Lasqueti Boom had two runs in October including a second over 1400m at Warwick Farm and returns to the venue for the TAB Maiden Handicap (1200m) with Jay Ford aboard.

She was given a quiet trial last trial last week before Curtis elected to come to the races in favour of giving her another tune up at the heats.

“She trialled OK last week and we think essentially needs the run,” Curtis said.

“She only had the one trial and is obviously Oaks bound at this stage so she will be ridden quietly and just hits the line.

“If there is a lot of speed on and she does something, that’s fantastic but if she just hits the line that’s the main thing for us.”

Lasqueti Boom is an $11 chance first-up from a break with Divots and Outlawed sharing favouritism at $2.90.
