Weights announced for 2023 Grand National: Any Second Now given joint-top weight

The weights for the Grand National at Aintree in April were announced on Tuesday with Any Second Chance, who was second last year, sharing the top weight of 11st 12lb with Conflated and Hewick.

Trainer Ted Walsh revealed he was “absolutely shocked” at the nine-year-old’s weight and admitted that the 14/1 shot’s chances of winning this year’s 4m 2½f race are now slim.

Connections being unhappy with the weights is not uncommon and last year Michael O’Leary pulled 2018 and 2019 winner Tiger Roll out of the race after being given a mark of 161.

Current 8/1 favourite and 2022 winner Noble Yeats comes in just behind at 11st 11lb but has the small matter of the Gold Cup at Cheltenham next month before the Grand National.

Delta Work, who finished third last year, is in at 11st 4lb and is down at 20/1 to win this year and he represents Irish trainer Gordon Elliott’s best hope of success.

Among the front-runners, second favourite Corach Rambler is the lightest at 10st 5lb and is 12/1 to win in April.

Meanwhile, Henry de Bromhead announced the retirement of 2021 winner Minella Times on the morning of the weights announcement. Rachael Blackmore became the first woman to ride a Grand National winner when the gelding triumphed by six and a half lengths.
