The surprise is total for supporters of Olympique de Marseille. Dimitri Payet, the iconic midfielder, left the club unexpectedly. While the 36-year-old player was under contract until June 2024, the Marseille leaders and the person concerned by mutual agreement decided to terminate the contract a year before the expiry date.

Dimitri Payet leaves OM, where to go?

This decision led to the emotion of Payet, this Friday, during a press conference where he confirmed his departure. He expressed his desire to leave « through the front door » and continue to play at the highest level despite his age. The player says he wants to win titles with his club. But now that his future at Marseille is closed, speculation is rife regarding his next destination. Among bookmakers, a move to Saudi Arabia seems the most likely scenario, with odds of 4/11 (including 4 euros to be won for one bet), for a transfer to a club in the Saudi Pro League.

Other options are also being considered by the operators, with odds of 5/1 for a continuation in Ligue 1 with Nice, and 7/1 for a transfer to Nantes, or to a Turkish club. A return to West Ham is also mentioned at odds of 12/1, as is a possible move to a Major League Soccer (MLS) side. Asked by The Sun, Alex Apati of Ladbrokes points out that many European players have already made the choice to join the Saudi league, and that Dimitri Payet could well be the next to benefit from a lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia.

Dimitri Payet spent eight years wearing the OM jersey, interspersed with a two-year transfer to West Ham. Before that, he defended the colors of FC Nantes, AS Saint-Etienne and Lille Losc. For now, the situation on his future remains uncertain, but one thing is certain, the attacking midfielder is attracting interest and speculation is rife on his next destination.
