Who Has Benefited Most From College Football Realignment?

The only constant in college football of late has been how much change there’s been on a conference-by-conference basis over the last three decades.

Beginning with the ACC’s additions of Miami and Virginia Tech from the Big East in 2003 and snowballing from there, there’s been no shortage of shuffling among Power Five and Group of Five members over the years.

With realignment once again shifting the landscape of college sports and football wagering at legal online sportsbooks about to kick off, USBettingReport.com utilized data from SportsReference.com to look back at the big winners following the round of realignment from 2011-2014.

Utah Best Realignment Team Over Last 12 Years

The No. 1 program that changed conferences a decade ago was the Utah Utes, who have won the Pac-12 Conference championship twice and made two New Year’s Six bowl games during their run with the conference.

The Kyle Whittingham-coached squad has also won the most games of the teams listed, at 96, while posting the most ranked finishes (six) of the group.

Utah has been a tour de force on the gridirons of the West of late, with three 10-win seasons in the past four years, while making the school’s first two Rose Bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022.

And Utah is on the move again, jumping to the Big 12 for the 2024 football season after the Pac-12 completely splintered last week.

Before it leaves, the Utes will take one more run at the Pac-12 title. Caesars Sportsbooklists Utah at +450 for the championship. USC is the favorite at +170, followed by Oregon and Washington (each at +330).

Other schools that cracked the top five were TCU (87-53 record, one Big 12 championship and one CFP appearance), UCF (86-41 record, four ranked finishes, four AAC championships, three New Year’s Six bowl game appearances), Cincinnati (86-41 record, four ranked finishes, three AAC championships, one CFP appearance) and Memphis (81-47 record, three ranked finishes, two AAC championships, one New Year’s Six bowl appearance).

The Horned Frogs and Cincinnati Bearcats are the only programs to reach the College Football Playoff of the quintet, with TCU advancing to the 2022 championship game, while the Bearcats fell to Alabama, 26-7, in the semifinal round in 2021.

U.S. mobile sports betting sites list TCU as a middle-of-the-pack pick to win the Big 12 (fifth at +1400), while Cincinnati is +6000 to win the Big 12 in its first season in the league. Three of the bottom four teams in Big 12 championship odds are newcomers to the league this year (BYU, Cincinnati and Houston).
