WIAA Level 3: Kimberly, Waunakee meet in battle of titans

The WIAA football playoffs continue Friday night across the state. Kimberly and Waunakee meet in a battle of titans.

Kimberly (10-1) and Waunakee (11-0) are playing in the WIAA Level 3 quarterfinal. They have dominated WAAA football for the past 15 years. Kimberly owns the state record for longest winning streak at 70 games. Wauna has won 31 straight games and averages 39.7 points a game.

Kaukauna (7-4) and Mequon Homestead (6-6) are playing in the WIAA Level 3 championship game. Homestake is seeded fifth in its bracket and the Ghosts are the sixth seed. Kaukauna runs a balanced offense with 2,079 yards rushing and 2.051 passing.

Notre Dame is the lowest seed remaining in the playoffs at No. 7. The Tritons are the Cinderella team that won at second-seed Reedsburg and third-seeded Menasha. Top- seed West Salem is 10-1 and has reeled off 10 straight wins.

Fond du Lac Springs (10-1) is the lower seed and the road team in the WIAA Division 6 championship game against Coleman (11-0). The Ledgers' coach Bob Hyland has won the most wins of any high school coach in Wisconsin (503) and is fourth-most successful coach nationwide. The Cougars have three running backs who average over 10 yards a carry. Coleman has completed only 17 passes on the season, but eight of them have gone for touchdowns.

Edgar (10-1) is going to play Eau Claire Regis (11-0) in the WIAA Level 3 championship game. Regi's offense is averaging 44 points a game and its defense is giving up just 38 points. Edgar's defense gives up 7.7 points per game, but it's only one loss this season.
