Wimbledon Day 4 Picks & Predictions for Alcaraz, Murray, Rybakina & More

The rain has wreaked havoc with the schedule in the opening days of Wimbledon, so it’s a mad scramble to get through the backlog of first-round matches and back on track for Wimbledon Day 4 on Thursday.

Only eight matches were completed under the roofs of Centre Court and No. 1 Court on Tuesday. Top contenders such as Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Elena Rybakina went through to the next round. 

The play on the outside courts was suspended because of the persistent rain, meaning those players will likely face a quick turnaround between their first and second round matches.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Alexandre Muller

Alcaraz made light work of Jeremy Chardy for the first two sets of his Wimbledon curtain-raiser before the 
Frenchman tested his mettle in the third set, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5.  Next up for the World No. 1 is France’s Alexandre Muller, who needed four sets to overcome fellow Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech,  7-6(5), 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

While this is the first-ever meeting between Alcaraz and Muller, it’s no surprise that the Spaniard is the massive favorite here. Muller’s chances are diminished not only by the gulf in talent and quality between him and Alcaraz, but the fact that he was one of the many victims of the wet English weather. Alcaraz, in the meanwhile, will be well-rested.

Andy Murray vs Stefanos Tsitsipas

The popcorn match of the day must be the clash between two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas, which is slated for Centre Court on Wednesday. It was the match tennis betting fans were hoping for when the draw came out.

Murray eased into the second round on Day 2 of Wimbledon, beating fellow Brit Ryan Peniston, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 to the delight of the Princess of Wales and Roger Federer, amongst many others invited to the Royal box on the day. 

Unlike Murray, Tsitsipas was among the many casualties of Tuesday’s terrible weather, returning on Wednesday to face Dominic Thiem in his tournament opener – another blockbuster match, to be fair that didn’t disappoint, as the pair went toe-to-toe for five sets before Tsitsipas came away the winner, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (8). 

The No. 1 Greek did brilliantly to survive his first test. Alas, the odds might be stacked against him here with a well-rested Murray that will  have the partisan crowd on Centre Court firmly behind him. Murray is playing solid tennis right now; he’s coming off a title on grass and reckons he has a good chance of competing for the title here.

Frances Tiafoe vs Dominic Stricker

American hopeful Frances Tiafoe overcame Yubing Wu in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday’s jam-packed tennis betting card. He’ll face Switzerland’s Dominic Stricker, who is coming off a five-set marathon victory over Alexei Popyrin 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5

Since reaching the semifinals of the 2022 US Open, Tiafoe has become a different player. More consistent. More reliable. More of a winner. 

Stricker is a 20-year-old up-and-comer with plenty of upside, but a five-set marathon in the first round followed by a quick turnaround here is a lot to overcome, Never mind  Tiafoe’s new-fangled confidence and strong grass-court game which will be challenging in of itself.

Tommy Paul vs Milos Raonic

American Tommy Paul is enjoying a solid run of form on grass after finishing runner-up in Eastbourne on Saturday. If there ever was a player that wouldn’t have minded Tuesday’s downpours and delays, it’s Paul, who ultimately got an extra day of rest. 

Paul opened his Wimbledon bid on Wednesday by dismissing Shintaro Mochizuki in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1. Next up for Paul is Canada’s big-serving Milos Raonic, who is staging a comeback after a long injury-riddled absence from the ATP Tour. 

Raonic will be pleased to notch his first win at the All England Club, though he needed four sets to book his place in the R64, overcoming Austria’s Dennis Novak 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1. In his heyday, Raonic was a tough out. But one reckons, he’ll face a much bigger ask against Paul, who is playing some of the best tennis of his career.

Elena Rybakina vs Alize Cornet

Reigning Wimbledon champion Rybakina was forced to go the distance as she launched her title-defense campaign at Wimbledon. 

Things aren’t going to get easier for the statuesque Kazakh as she takes on wily veteran Alize Cornet in the second round. Cornet upset World No. 1 Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon last year, making her a potential stumbling block.

Rybakina will be keen to avoid a similar such fate and her power game will be key towards that end. Expect a tough fight but a straight set win for Rybakina nonetheless.

Beatriz Haddad-Maia vs Jaqueline Cristian

Beatriz Haddad-Maia enjoyed a major breakthrough last month in Roland Garros, reaching the semifinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. While she is a solid clay courter, she’s arguably a better grass-court player and has won titles on this surface. Thus, she’s a popular sleeper tennis pick at SW19.

During her Cinderella run in Paris, she demonstrated a steely resolve and grit, battling through three-setters in four of six matches and twice coming back from a set down. 

Interestingly, her Wimbledon campaign got off to a similar start against dangerous floater Yulia Putinseva, as she dropped the first set before rallying to win in three 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. 

Next up for Haddad Maia is Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian who took out Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Cristian did well to capitalize on her favorable spot in the draw to reach the second round of Wimbledon. It’s hard to see her going further, though. She’s typically a player that struggles at the top level and Haddad Maia should prove too much for her.

Sorana Cirstea vs Jelena Ostapenko

Jelena Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, is one of those players that can blow hot and cold from tournament to tournament. When she’s on, she’s a tough out. But when she’s not, she’s beatable. 

Ostapenko takes a 3-0 head-to-head edge over Sorana Cirstea into their second-round contest, a run of form that includes a win this year in Rome (clay) in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. 

Cirstea is a veteran that has a lot of experience and tennis nous to lean on which could make her competitive here. However the surface advantage goes to Ostapenko and her power game. If the Latvian comes out firing on all cylinders, she’ll outhit and out-serve Cirstea comfortably.
