Women’s World Cup 2023 – Golden Boot favourites

Daly can be Lionesses’ shining light

England head Down Under as 7/2 second favourites to lift the trophy. Confidence will be high in Sarina Wiegman’s squad after their European Championship triumph last summer, despite the retirement of Ellen White, who like Americans Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe scored six times at the 2019 finals.

With Beth Mead out for the Lionesses through injury, three potential candidates to lead the England line are Rachel Daly, Alessia Russo and Bethany England.

Daly was incredible in the WSL last season, scoring 22 times for Aston Villa and winning the competition’s Golden Boot. Her form and performances have given Wiegman another option up top as a potential replacement for White.

The 31-year-old, 10/1 to be top scorer at this year’s World Cup, should rival Arsenal striker Russo for a place in the England starting XI. The Gunner has fired 11 goals in 21 matches for her country.

Russo, priced at 14/1 for the Golden Boot, could be used off the bench because of her fantastic exploits when coming on the pitch later during last summer’s European Championship.

The United States are chasing a third consecutive World Cup victory and a record fifth overall. They are the favourites to achieve both feats and with Morgan leading the line they have a potential Golden Boot winner.

She was the joint leading scorer in the 2019 tournament, although her six-goal haul included five in one match against Thailand and the winner in the semi-final against England. The San Diego Wave captain is 4/1 to win the Golden Boot this time.

While Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the American squad, 22-year-old Sophia Smith – 13/2 in the Golden Boot market – is very much a star in the making.

The Portland Thorns forward’s record of 12 goals in 29 matches for the United States has led many to predict she will be the natural successor to Morgan and Rapinoe, who has 63 goals for her country.

Australia’s Sam Kerr, who brings a remarkable record of 63 goals in 120 internationals to the tournament and the experience of starring in Chelsea’s double-winning season, is 10/1 for the Golden Boot.

France’s recently recalled record goalscorer, Eugenie Le Sommer, who has netted 88 times for her country, and Alexandra Popp, the Germany captain, are two others who may be worth noting in the market. Both priced at 14/1, they could be worth a punt if you expect their respective nations to go far in the competition.
