Wyndham Championship 2023 Predictions, Odds & Picks

Next week, this year’s FedEx Cup Playoffs will begin with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. First, though, the final field for that event will be determined at this week’s Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In previous years, 125 players would take part in the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. This year, however, only 70 players will be in the FedEx St. Jude Championship field will consist of only 70 players. This is because players will have the fall events to earn their PGA Tour cards for next year, which will see the tour return to a calendar-year format.

That puts a number of notable players in a perilous position entering the Wyndham Championship, including former major champions Adam Scott, Justin Thomas, and Shane Lowry.

On Sunday, Lee Hodges secured his ticket to the FedEx St. Jude Championship and BMW Championship by winning the 3M Open, his first PGA Tour win. With the win, Hodges leapt from 74th to 33rd in the FedEx Cup standings, putting him in a realistic position to qualify for the Tour Championship over the coming weeks.

Will someone else similarly help themselves at the Wyndham Championship? The spotlight will be on the likes of Thomas and Scott, but another surprise winner could be in the cards.

2023 Wyndham Championship Predictions and Picks

There isn’t really anyone that sticks out above anyone else this week because of recent wins or previous Wyndham Championship wins, so making a single winner pick this week was not an easy choice.

Instead, this week’s outlay is being split between two favorites, both of whom have previously done well at Sedgefield.

Tournament Winner Predictions & Picks

Sungjae Im (+1800)

Im led the 2022 Wyndham Championship after 54 holes last year, but he finished five strokes behind winner Tom Kim, who shot a final-round 61, seven strokes better than Im’s closing 68.

He fell short of the win, but it was yet another strong result for Im at Sedgefield. In addition to finishing tied for second last year, he finished tied for ninth in 2020 and tied for sixth in 2019.

Im finished tied for 20th at the British Open, which is respectable. But sandwiched around that result, he missed the cut at the Scottish Open and 3M Open. Returning to a course where he has done well should see Im back at his best this week.

Si Woo Kim (+2500)

Kim missed the cut at his last two tournaments, the Travelers Championship and British Open, but like Im, he has a history of strong Wyndham Championship results.

Kim won the tournament in 2016, his first PGA Tour win, and while he has yet to join the group of players who have won this tournament twice, he has had a number of solid finishes since. He finished fifth in 2019, tied for 3rd in 2020, and lost in a six-man playoff in 2021.

Other Wyndham Championship Picks

J.T. Poston to finish in the top ten (+375)

Poston won the Wyndham Championship in 2019 and is worth a look as a tournament winner pick this year, given his recent form.

At the 3M Open, he finished tied for second, seven strokes behind Hodges. It was Poston’s first top-five finish since winning the John Deere Classic in July 2022 but his third top-ten finish in his last four tournaments. He tied for sixth at this year’s John Deere Classic, then produced the same finish the following week at the Scottish Open.

Poston is also +175 to finish in the top 20, which is outstanding value for a former champion who enters the tournament with some solid recent results.

Russell Henley to finish in the top 20 (+140)

Henley won the World Wide Technology Championship in November and has eight top-20 finishes in the 2022-23 season.

He also has three straight top-ten finishes at the Wyndham Championship, coming in tied for ninth in 2020, tied for seventh in 2021, and tied for fifth in 2022.

Shane Lowry to finish in the top 20 (+150)

It may not help him get into the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but Lowry should have a good week at Sedgefield.

He hasn’t had a fantastic season, posting only one top-five finish in 17 events. But he, as well as Thomas (19 events) and Scott (16 events), is also on the outside looking entering the Wyndham Championship because he has played fewer events than the players ahead of him.

However, he has been a regular finisher in and around the top 20. He has finished in the top 20 nine times in his 17 events and had a run of five top-20 finishes in six tournaments before surprisingly missing the cut at the British Open.

Lowry is also +320 to finish in the top ten and +600 to finish in the top five. Both of those have some value given his need to perform well this week.

Taylor Moore to finish in the top 20 (+260)

Moore finished tied for fifth in last year’s Wyndham Championship, and he can help his Tour Championship hopes with a repeat performance this week.

Moore, who won the Valspar Championship in March, is currently 27th in the FedEx Cup standings. He is in the FedEx St. Jude Championship field and all but a lock for the BMW Championship, but his recent form leaves him with a challenge to hold on to Tour Championship eligibility.

Moore has missed the cut five times in his last six tournaments, and those struggles can’t continue if he is to remain in the top 30 over the next few weeks.

But there is reason for optimism that Moore could get back on track this week. He finished tied for fifth in last year’s Wyndham Championship, and his lone decent finish in his current rough run was a tie for fourth in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

That is more or less a microcosm of Moore’s season. He has finished in the top 15 eight times in 26 events, but he has also missed the cut ten times.

At his best, Moore is capable of contending this week, and there’s a lot of value in backing him to do so. In addition to those top-20 odds, he is +1200 to finish in the top five and +550 to finish in the top ten.
