Wyndham Championship Betting Tips

This week we head to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2023 Wyndham Championship where SportsLens’ resident golf expert Joe Lyons is offering up some of our very own betting tips and predictions.

The Wyndham Championship is played annually in Greensboro and has been held at Sedgefield since 2008. This marks the final event of the PGA Tour’s Regular Season and presents a final opportunity for hopefuls to secure their place inside the top 70 of the FedExCup standings.

Following the action in North Carolina this week, a series of three events over the month of August will be played at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, BMW Championship and TOUR Championship to determine the FedExCup Champion.

Wyndham Championship 2023 Preview

This year’s defending champion is world number 18 Tom Kim, who beat John Huh and Sungjae Im by five strokes with a score of -20 in 2022. The 21-year-old will not be defending his crown this year after suffering a Grade 1 tear in his right ankle at The Open.

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design (others include Detroit Golf Club and East Lake) and shares similarities to tracks such as Harbour Town, Waialae Country Club, Sea Island Resort, TPC River Highlands, TPC Deere Run and Colonial Country Club.

At a shorter-than-usual 7,131 yards which plays as a par-70, position off-the-tee, short irons/wedges and top-drawer putting are the keys to victory at Sedgefield this week. When Tom Kim won last year, the Korean blew the field away by gaining 3.14 strokes with the flat stick despite losing 0.28 around the greens.

Eight of Sedgefield’s par-4s are between 400-450 yards in length and nearly 30% of approach shots are from 150-175 yards. We’re in for a birdie fest once again and former winners Jim Herman, JT Poston, Si Woo Kim, Davis Love III, Webb Simpson and Ryan Moore will fancy their chances.

None of the players inside the Official Golf World Ranking’s top-15 will make the trip to North Carolina, leaving Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, Sungjae Im, Hideki Matsuyama and Shane Lowry as the highest-credentialed competitors for the Wyndham Championship.

The stakes are higher than ever for those hoping to qualify for the FedExCup playoffs; Shane Lowry needs top-22, Justin Suh needs top-18, Justin Thomas needs top-17, Adam Scott needs top-8, Gary Woodland needs top-2 whilst Billy Horschel and Ludvig Aberg both need to win.

Wyndham Championship Tip 1: Denny McCarthy To Win And Each Way (8 Places) @ 30/1 with BetUK

Denny McCarthy is widely regarded as one of the best putters in the game and the 30-year-old will be aiming to snatch a maiden PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship this week.

He’s come close on multiple occasions this season with finishes such as T6 at the Bermuda, T4 at the AT&T, T8 at Wells Fargo, 2nd at the Memorial, T7 at the Travelers and T6 at the John Deere. In a significantly weaker field than usual, McCarthy will see this as a strong opportunity to get on the board with a win.

His iron play was all over the place when missing the cut at The Open recently but I’m willing to put this down to Hoylake simply not being a suitable course for him, losing 1.3 strokes off-the-tee and putting himself in uncomfortable positions from the go.

McCarthy ranks third in strokes gained putting as well as first in putting inside ten feet. His approach play will need to be on form to put himself in with a chance at Sedgefield this week and he has performed well around similar tracks in the past.

He has two finishes inside the top-25 at Harbour Town in the last two years, gaining strokes in approach on both occasions. In 2022, he finished T10 in the RSM Classic at Sea Island whilst gaining 0.74 strokes in approach. He doesn’t need an unbelievable week with the irons to win since his level of putting can carry him to victory, simply one where he isn’t losing strokes.

Two consecutive T6 finishes at TPC Deere Run and a recent T7 at TPC River Highlands where he gained 1.06 strokes in approach should hand McCarthy a wave of confidence heading into this week’s final event of the regular season.

Last year was the first time he missed the cut at the Wyndham Championship after finishes of T36-T22-T9-T15 so we know he can go well around here and if the 30-year-old can put the pieces together, he should deliver a great challenge to win for the first time.

Priced with the best golf betting sites at 30/1, Denny McCarthy is our headline pick to win the Wyndham Championship.

Wyndham Championship Tip 2: Cam Davis To Win And Each-Way (12 Places) @ 40/1 with BetUK

Cam Davis is fresh off the back of a promising 3M Open where he finished T10 and the Australian has enjoyed his time at the Wyndham Championship previously, posting T22 and T15 finishes in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

He’s recorded eight finishes inside the top 20 this season including five inside the top ten and is bidding to win a second PGA Tour title following victory at a similar track in the Rocket Mortgage (Detroit Golf Club) in 2021 – followed by T14 and T17 finishes the following two years.

Despite some trouble with the flat stick this season, Davis enjoyed Donald Ross’ Bermuda greens at Detroit by gaining 0.34 strokes on the greens and there’s every chance his putter could catch fire and hand a significant boost to his chances of winning this week.

He brings the form from similar courses also, posting T3 and T7 finishes at Harbour Town in the RBC Heritage. Davis has gained strokes with his putter in two of his last three starts, with the exception being the slow and difficult greens on the links at the Scottish Open last month.

The Australian ranks 13th on the PGA Tour in approaches from 150-175 yards which could prove to be the key at Sedgefield this week, alongside 6th in approaches from greater than 100 yards. He’s also sixth in putting from 10-15 feet with a 39% strike rate.

Davis is right on the cusp of a spot in the FedExCup playoffs, currently sitting in 69th where only the top-70 will qualify so the motivation is most definitely there to have a huge week. At 40/1 (12 places), Cam Davis looks a promising each-way pick for the Wyndham Championship.

Wyndham Championship Tip 3: Chris Kirk To Win And Each-Way (12 Places) @ 50/1 with BetUK

Like Denny McCarthy, Chris Kirk’s irons were a disaster around Hoylake at The Open which led to a missed cut but he arrives fresh at Sedgefield with a T14 at the Rocket Mortgage and T21 at the John Deere under his belt to build on in the Wyndham Championship.

The 38-year-old has already tasted victory on the PGA Tour this season, winning the Honda Classic back in February and has four T10 finishes to his name. He has enjoyed playing around Waialae Country Club, finishing 3rd in January and T2 in 2021.

Kirk has also finished inside the top 21 in each of his four starts at Detroit Golf Club and ranks well statistically heading into action this week. He’s 23rd in total strokes gained on the tour alongside 38th in approach and 58th in putting.

He ranks third in approaches from 125-150 yards and seventh in approaches from 50-125 yards, as well as 13th around-the-green. He’s made the cut in each of his six starts at the Wyndham Championship, including a T11 finish in 2018 where he gained 1.75 strokes putting.

His iron play was in fine shape prior to Hoylake and assuming that was a blip and he returns to form this week in North Carolina, 50/1 shot Chris Kirk (12 places) ticks all the boxes.

Wyndham Championship Tip 4: Chesson Hadley To Win And Each-Way (12 Places) @ 100/1 with BetUK

Chesson Hadley is coming off two solid performances with a T6 at the Barracuda Championship and T27 at the 3M Open last week, looking to be a solid longshot pick to win the Wyndham Championship this week at 100/1 (12 places).

Hadley has made the cut in five consecutive starts at the Wyndham Championship including T15 and T8 finishes in 2021 and 2022 where his putter caught fire and iron play was in impressive shape.

He’s posting positive numbers in approach (57th) and putting (47th) on the tour this season. He’s performed well on the same Donald Ross bermuda greens at Detroit Golf Club in the past, gaining 1.16 strokes putting in 2022 and 1.14 in 2020 despite missing the cut on both occasions.

He finished T7 around Harbour Town at the RBC Heritage in 2018 and has gained 2.61, 1.28 and 2.27 strokes putting in each of his last three starts at Sea Island in the RSM Classic. Another strong week with the flat stick could project his name into contention as Chesson Hadley rounds off our Wyndham Championship tips.
