Yankees’ Aaron Judge reveals a personal goal for new season

TAMPA Aaron Judge’s No. 1 goal is the same every baseball season. It’s the one big one that he’s never achieved, winning a championship.

The reigning American League Most Valuable Player also writes out personal goals for every year that he keeps to himself. Following the Yankees’ first full-squad practice of spring training Monday, also his first as team captain, Judge did admit that he wouldn’t rule out following his league-record 62-homer season with another 60 or so.

“You never know,” Judge said with a smile.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone often brings up how Judge is never satisfied with any part of his game and last season improved his baserunning in a big way, even beyond his impressive 16 stolen bases in 19 tries.

Judge already has a part of his game singled out to work on this season. He wants to cut down on his strikeouts.

“I think contact rate is something I want to improve on,” Judge said.

Judge was among the league leaders with 175 strikeouts last season, but his 25.1 K rate was the second-lowest of his career. His .194 batting average with two strikes was a hair above his .191 career mark.

To cut down on his whiffs, Judge says he might “mix in a no stride” hitting approach, which would be a drastic switch from his usual big-stride swing.

“I’ve talked to other big leaguers around the game that I admire their swing.” Judge said. “I was like, ‘Hey, let’s go out to dinner. Let’s hit in the cage. Let me pick your brain a little bit about what you do in the box.’

“There’s just some guys I’ve talked to that have some really good two-strike approaches and I might be mixing that in there from time to time.”

Judge, by the way, also made it clear that he plans on winning a Gold Glove at some point in his career. He was an AL finalist for right field last season.

“There’s a Gold Glove in there somewhere,” Judge said. “I don’t know if it’ll be this year or a couple years down the road, but it’ll get figured out.”
