Yorkshire Cup tips and odds: Quickthorn backed to win

The Yorkshire Cup is the feature race on the third and final day of the Dante Meeting at York Racecourse. It is a Group 2 contest in the stayers’ division, run over 1m 6f on the Knavesmire.

Stradivarius made history last year by becoming the first horse to win the race three times. The defending champion is now retired, so there will be a new name on the trophy this year.

A field of seven has been declared for the latest renewal. It includes last season’s Lonsdale Cup winner Quickthorn, recent Dubai Gold Cup winner Broome and 2022 St Leger winner Eldar Eldarov.

Despite having a lot of success in this division, particularly at Royal Ascot in the Ascot Gold Cup, this is a race that Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has yet to win. He will be hoping Broome can change that after he saddles him up on Friday afternoon.

Quickthorn at home on the Knavesmire

QUICKTHORN enjoyed the biggest success of his career here last season when he blew his rivals away in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup, scoring by an emphatic 14 lengths.

Hughie Morrison’s six-year-old enjoys it on the Knavesmire, where he was also second of 20 in the 2021 Ebor. He is now rated 10lb higher than that day, which is why he is now in Group 2 company.

He has already had one start this year, travelling to the UAE for the Dubai Gold Cup in March. He did not run badly at Meydan, finishing sixth in a race won by Broome. Expect to see him take a big step forward on that appearance as he will have shaken off all the cobwebs from the winter.

The son of Nathaniel is often at his best in the early stages of the season. Former champion Jockey Oisin Murphy is back on board, which is a big positive, and the horse will enjoy the good ground.

With just five races on turf, ELDAR ELDAROV is one of the least experienced runners in this year’s Yorkshire Cup field. The highlight of 2022 for Roger Varian’s four-year-old came in September with his victory in the St Leger at Doncaster, where beat some of the best stayers of his generation.

The son of Dubawi was also victorious in the Group 2 Queen’s Vase over 1m 6f at Royal Ascot in June, suggesting that this is his optimum trip.

Unfortunately for his connections, he was unable to end the season on a high on British Champions Day at Ascot where he could only finish seventh of eight runners in the Long Distance Cup over two miles. That poor run can be forgiven as it came in October, long after his primary targets for the year.

Eldar Eldarov has prevailed on his opening start of the season in each of the last two years. Varian will have him fit and ready for this assignment and will be hoping he can lay down a marker for the Ascot Gold Cup next month.
