Alexander Zverev v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

Zverev and Carballes Baena have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Zverev Coming off Back to Back Defeats

Not that it has been the best ever start to the season to Zverev who was returning to competitive tennis following a good few months of a layoff but it did look like he was getting back to his best.

Over the past three tournaments, however, things haven’t quite looked as bright for the German.

At the Miami Masters, Zverev was dumped out in the second round by Taro Daniel, and he then lost an ill-tempered match to Daniil Medvedev in the third round at Monte-Carlo. Zverev would have been expected to overcome Medvedev, a player who has barely done anything of note on clay.

This was followed by more pain for Zverev who fell in straight sets to Christopher O’Connell in his opener at Munich.

Can he shrug these recent results off in this second round match against a player who has recently risen to 53rd in the world?

Carballes Baena Eases Past Goffin

After having won his second career title just two weeks ago at Marrakesh, Carballes Baena had stumbled to a first round defeat in Munich to Marcos Giron. It wasn’t a match he was expected to lose on clay, especially not after the kind of form he had shown earlier.

Which is why, despite coming in as a 1/2 favourite against David Goffin, there were questions around Carballes Baena’s consistency and if he could get past his Belgian opponent.

He did so and in straight sets too, needing an hour and 28 minutes to make it to the second round for the first time at the Madrid Masters.

What was so wonderful to watch was Carballes Baena’s serving which saw him win 90% of his first serve points. That enabled him to face no break-points with the Spaniard losing just nine points on serve spread across 10 games.

Can he now shock a former top 10 player?

Zverev v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

While Zverev is 1/4 to win this, we could be looking at a bit of a fight here which takes us to a third set. Zverev to just about edge the contest.
