Cameron Norrie v Yosuke Watanuki Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between Norrie and Watanuki.

Norrie Hoping to Shrug off Early Barcelona Exit

Norrie was one of the few top players in the world who had travelled to South America to feature in two of the clay court competitions there. And he had done impressively too, having reached the final of both, the Buenos Aires Open and Rio Open.

While he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the former, he came back strongly to defeat the same opponent in Rio’s title-decider to lift his first title of the season.

Which is why, it was a tad surprising to see Norrie bow out early of the Barcelona Open, losing to Lorenzo Musetti after having taken the first set.

He now enters the Madrid Masters for the second time in his career, having gotten knocked of the tournament in the third round last year by Alcaraz.

Norrie will have a better chance of making past that hurdle this time given his draw but he will need to conjure up something similar to what he did in South America to have a chance here.

Watanuki Sends Moutet Home

Corentin Moutet has been out of action for a while now and it came as no surprise that Watanuki had gone into their first round match as a favourite despite starting out as a qualifier.

And in the end, the world number 117 did not face any difficulties in getting past Moutet, defeating the Frenchman 6-3, 6-3. The match lasted an hour and 39 minutes.

Watanuki, who had earlier qualified for the Houston Open too in what was his first ever clay court competition but lost in his opener, registered his third career win on dirt here.

What was interesting to note was that despite slamming eight aces and registering a first serve win percentage of 70, Watanuki faced 12 break-points in the entire match and was broken just twice. In turn he got the better of Moutet’s serve five times.

He might not get a lot of opportunities against Norrie while at the same time, his opponent won’t let 10 break-points go waste!

Norrie v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Norrie to win this and to do that in straight sets we feel. One of the sets could go the distance though.
