The movie is about neo-noir. It's about money. There's some police corruption. I think it's just to satisfy the requirements of neo Noir.

The film Thief is about a jewel thief who wants to adopt Jessie. Caan shows a lot more vulnerability in this role than in previous roles. The cinematographer is Donald E. Thorin, who later worked on many other films. The camera takes you into the details whether you like it or not. It was the first film for cinematography Donald Mann. He later used Donald Thorins' camera for many films including Purple Rain, First Wives Club and many others. In Thief, he used a close-up of the drill going through metal. This is important. Thief was Mann's first feature film. After watching the camera work in Thief many directors wanted to hire Thoran afterwards.
