Glorious Goodwood going improves to soft, good to soft in places

There has been money for two JP McManus-owned horses at Galway including Royal Ascot winner Dawn Rising in the Rockshore Refreshingly Irish Race (8.10).

Mt Leinster, representing Willie Mullins who has won this 1m6f contest four times in the last seven years, was the overnight favourite but has drifted to 9-4 (from 7-4) due to the strength of support for Dawn Rising.

The Joseph O'Brien-trained six-year-old now leads the market and is a general 13-8 chance (from 5-2) to follow up his Queen Alexandra victory. Dawn Rising drops significantly in distance from his success at the royal meeting but has displayed decent form at the trip, namely when third in a Group 3 at Leopardstown in May.

McManus, who has enjoyed two winners so far this week courtesy of Neveradullmoment and Hercule Du Seuil, also has a well-backed chance in the opening Guinness Galway Tribes Handicap Hurdle (5.00).

Sundial is 5-1 (from 9) to follow up last month's Kilbeggan maiden hurdle win and is vying for favouritism with Buddy One, who was placed at the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree's Grand National meeting.

Sundial is competing off a 2lb lower mark than when fourth in the Boodles and could get McManus off to the perfect possible start

Rhoscolyn backed to gain two Goodwood wins in three days

There has been support for Rhoscolyn to record his second win of the week at Glorious Goodwood in the Coral Golden Mile (3.00).

David O'Meara's five-year-old justified 2-1 favouritism in a 7f handicap at the Sussex venue on Wednesday and is 14-1 (from 18) to quickly follow up over an extra furlong. The 94-rated Rhoscolyn is yet to win over a mile and has to shoulder a penalty, but he was second in the race in 2021 off a mark of 104.

Another former runner-up in the £150,000 handicap has been well backed with Rhoscolyn's stablemate Blue For You 8-1 (from 12) to go one better than last year's second. Awaal, third in both the Royal Hunt Cup and Bunbury Cup, is 8-1 (from 10) to improve on those excellent efforts.

Highfield Princess is the only Group 1 winner in the King George Qatar Stakes (3.35) and plenty have taken the short price about John Quinn's mare who is now 4-6 (from 10-11) to win at Goodwood for the first time.

Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: “The favourite is strong as she bids to return to winning ways in a slightly lower grade than her last two outings and put her on track for the Nunthorpe for which she also heads the market. There’s also been a few quid each-way for recent York winner Nymphadora.”

Glorious Goodwood going improves to soft, good to soft in places

There has been some improvement in the going description ahead of day four of Glorious Goodwood with the going now soft, good to soft in places.

All eight races on Thursday were contested on soft ground but good is featured in the going description for the first time since Tuesday’s opening day.

Ahead of the seven-race card headlined by the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes where Highfield Princess will bid for her first win of the season, clerk of the course Ed Arkell said: “We are now soft, good to soft in places and 6.6 on the going stick.

“The forecast is for a dry day with some sunny spells.

“I suspect at the moment it may be a little more overcast than yesterday and that’s about where we are. We’ll get some rain tomorrow and I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re back to good to soft, soft in places at some point during the afternoon.”

The going has also changed at Galway after a dry day on Thursday with the jumps track now good all over having been good to yielding and the Flat course good to yielding rather than just yielding.

“It was a dry, breezy day yesterday,” said clerk of the course Lorcan Wyer.

“The forecast is dry this morning but there is some rain coming in later this afternoon and it could be potentially raining up until 7am on Saturday morning. It looks like the bulk of the rain is potentially after racing, 15-20mm in advance of racing on Saturday."

The headline event of the eight-race mixed card which gets underway at 5pm is the Guinness Handicap (6.30) where Weston could improve a superb week for Alymer Stud and Gordon Elliott, who combined to land the Galway Plate on Wednesday with Ash Tree Meadow.

The Alymer-owned My Mate Mozzie was also third in Thursday’s Galway Hurdle and Weston leads the market at 7-2 for the 18-runner Premier Handicap. Chris Hayes has been booked for the first time to partner the four-year-old, who was last seen finishing fifth in the Ascot Stakes.
