King George Qatar Stakes 2023 Betting Tips and Predictions

On day four at Glorious Goodwood, the feature race, in terms of prestige at least, is the King George Qatar Stakes, which will be the third race on the card and is due off at 3.00.

This is a Group 2 contest, one that has been won by some very useful types in recent years, including Kingsgate Native, Battash and Khaadem. The race is run over a speedy five furlongs, which after days of rain, will be more testing than usual this time around.

There’s a short-priced favourite in the early betting, but is this really a one-horse race? We’ll soon find out, but before that here are our best predictions and betting tips:

Our Best Prediction: Highfield Princess @ 10/11

Regardless of how you look at this race, regardless of what you think any of the others are capable of, this must go down as an absolute gilt-edged opportunity for the Group 1-winning Highfield Princess to regain the winning thread. This contest represents a step down in grade and the mount of Jason Hart can take advantage.

Rated at least 9lbs better than any other runner in this contest, the six-year-old found one too good on seasonal reappearance at York, while she has since been touched off twice at Ascot, though both of those races were at Group 1 level and she went close on both occasions. Now back in Group 2 company, the mare ought to make amends. A repeat of anything like the level of form shown towards the end of last season and she’d likely win this with a bit in hand.

Our Each Way Prediction: Nymphadora (each-way) @ 16/1

For those not interested in a short-priced favourite, Nymphadora should be considered. Were it not for the presence of Highfield Princess, then I’d be very sweet on her chances. As it stands, she’s a seriously viable each-way poke, especially all the time 16/1 is on offer.

Crucially, soft ground is her thing, as she has proved on several occasions. She won nicely over this trip on soft ground at Chester back in May, beating the 107-rated King’s Lynn in the process. That’s decent form, it cannot be denied. Last time out, again with cut in the ground, she got the job done at York, delivering her most impressive success yet. On that occasion, she beat the re-opposing Silky Wilkie and she did so in good style. It will not surprise me in the slightest if she travels up near the pace and has the turn of foot to challenge near the death here, and even if the odds-on favourite does prove to be too good, the Andrew Balding filly can collect some place money.
