Grand National 2023 grey horses: What grey horses are running? Odds and preview as Gaillard Du Mesnil big chance for Willie Mullins

The Grand National is the showpiece of jump racing and is among the biggest spectacles of British racing broadcast across the world.

But one thing that catches many punters’ eyes at the Grand National, is the few greys among the field of 40 runners.

Despite their popularity, grey horses winning the National is quite uncommon.

The last grey to win the Grand National was Neptune Collonges in 2012, and popularity of the greys has increased ever since..

Only three grey horses have ever won the Grand National since its first ever run in 1839.

The Lamb (1868, 1871)Nicolaus Silver (1961)

Neptune Collonges (2012)

The rarity of winners is primarily due to their small population in comparison to the rest.

But still, every year we see small amount of grey horses aiming for the race, with just three running in the 2022 renewal.

2023 Grand National grey horses and odds

This year’s event is still some weeks away and as a result there are still 73 horses entered out of a possible 40 runners.

But it does mean there are still five grey horses in contention for the 2023 Grand National.

  • Gaillard Du Mesnil 12/1
  • Vanillier 25/1
  • Coko Beach 33/1
  • Farclas 66/1
  • Eva’s Oskar 100/1

Gaillard Du Mesnil’s chances of winning the 2023 Grand National are similar to that of Snow Leopardess in 2022.

The Willie Mullins-trained horse won the National Hunt Challenge Cup at Cheltenham Festival on the final race of the opening day.

The gelding looked beat with a huge amount of ground to cover but stayed on with three fences to take and eventually led inside the final half furlong, beating Chemical Energy by just under three lengths.

That testing race suggests he should be well up for the Grand National test.

The Cheltenham trip was 3m6f, with 23 fences and to finish in the style he did confirms his stamina and jumping abilities.

Coko Beach was available at 100/1 in the antepost last year and went off at 50’s, and rewarded many punters who backed him each-way with eight places.

He’s much shorter in the market this year already available as high as 33/1.

He wears the same colours as two-time Grand National winner Tiger Roll, the Gigginstown Stud colours.

Who often have a few entries into this race along with most stamina tests throughout the season.

Notably, there was a 1-2-3 in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown in February with Coko Beach finishing comfortably ahead of Death Duty (100/1) and Defi Bleu (100/1).
