2022 Heritage Classic: Why the Sabres are the first U.S. team to play in the event
The Buffalo Sabres will play in the 2022 Heritage Classic in Hamilton, Ontario. It's the third time the Sabres have played in an outdoor NHL game. The Maple Leafs have previously played the Winter Classic, a Stadium Series game and the NHL Centennial Classic.
The Sabres are the first U.S. team to play in the Heritage Classic. The previous five events have been played by Canadian teams. Location was a factor in NHL's decision to choose the teams for the 2022 event. Buffalo is the closest team and it's about a two-hour drive between the KeyBank Center in Buffalo and the Scotiabank Centre in Toronto.
