The PGA Tour travels to the southeast for the Florida Swing. We open with the Honda Classic at PGA National ahead of Bay Hill next week. With the Honda Classic being sandwiched between elevated events, the strength of this week’s field is precipitously lower than that of our previous two tournaments. Will this present an opportunity for a golfer to break through? Read through this week’s Honda Classic Betting Preview before digging into our following betting picks.

Billy Horschel +2800 (FanDuel Sportsbook)

Above you will find several statistics listed that I used to generate a model for form over the last 36 rounds. After putting that together, I took my model and tossed it in the trash when I saw Billy Horschel priced in the same group as golfers looking to break through. Did we mention this tournament is in Florida?

Horschel brings a phenomenal track record at PGA National without yet securing a win. His recent form has not been ideal but we won’t worry as much as Billy embarks on his favorite part of the tournament schedule. A Bermuda boy, Horschel will be in consideration every week throughout the Florida swing. Why not take a swing on him when the field is this weak?

Thomas Detry +4000 (BetMGM)

So, I went to the garbage can and pulled back out my statistical model. When I was able to un-crumple the model and clean it up, I noticed that Thomas Detry checks so many boxes. Detry leads the field in Bogey Avoidance — a statistic I am focused on at a challenging course. The Bear Trap is going to give players fits. I want my card filled with players that can get through that three-hole stretch relatively unscathed.

Detry has not missed a cut since a September Korn Ferry Tour event. He made the cut last week at the Genesis and finished in the top 40. He ranks 11th in putting and 15th in driving distance. All of this feels like enough to wager a 1/2 unit on BetMGM.

Lee Hodges +5500 (Caesars)

Lee Hodges finally broke a streak of five missed cuts with a spectacular top 20 at last week’s Genesis Invitational. He is top ten in SG: Approach and Bogey Avoidance as well as Proximity from 175-200 yards. His all-around game suits the demands of this week’s test.

Hodges shines last season at the Honda with a ninth place finish. In contention all week, Hodges closed with a big top ten. With the strength of the field, Hodges leaps off the paper when considering recent form. For our sake, hopefully, his performance at the Genesis Invitational is a springboard for greater things to come soon.

We will wager 0.4 units on Hodges on Caesar’s.

Ben Griffin +7000 (FanDuel)

Finally, we go down the board looking for form. We backed Ben Griffin at Pebble Beach and foolishly made him our one-and-done selection because of his form. Now, we get Griffin at a big discount after he disappointed us with the same tools that brought interest weeks ago.

Griffin sits 4th in SG: Approach even after his missed cut and 12th in Bogey Avoidance. For 70/1, we could do worse to round out our opening card. We will close with 0.3 units on Griffin at FanDuel.
