2023 Preseason Kicks off with Hall of Fame Game

It's one of the most anticipated events on the NFL calendar, and a pair of playoff-hopeful franchises are set to go head to head in Canton, OH.

The New York Jets are going to give Zach Wilson a look behind center, and the No. 2 pick from the 2021 NFL Draft should have a lengthy stretch running the No. 2 offense against the Cleveland Browns.

There won't be any Cleveland starters hitting the field, either, so this game is unlikely to feature many big names.

I’m not a big trends guy, but this one has longer legs for me: Five of the past six Hall of Fame Games have finished below this total of 33.5 points.

It makes sense. Players are just putting the pads on during training camps and offenses aren’t in sync.

The total and spread of this game also suggest it’s going to be a close, low-scoring tilt, and I give Cleveland a slight home-field advantage with a pro-Brownies crowd likely to stroll down the highway to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

As a result, I’m targeting the outlier +110 price for the Cleveland moneyline through FanDuel - or Caesars, which has that same number as of Wednesday morning. Patience could also pay off here because I’m anticipating the betting action to continue coming in on the Jets, so a better number could become available closer to Thursday’s kickoff.

There isn’t a huge gap in the available numbers, with the difference between +110 and +100 equalling a positive expected value of 5%.

As noted, I’m expecting the majority of betting action to continue coming in on the Jets. BetMGM released betting trends Tuesday and 59% of the spread handle was on New York. It’s also worth highlighting that Cleveland opened as a -120 moneyline favorite at the sportsbook and is now trading at the highlighted +105 odds.

There hasn’t been any movement to the total through BetMGM despite 69% of the betting handle coming in on the Under.
